Well that really depends. I know some stay-at-home women who work more than their husbands do. All the cleaning, cooking, making the house look good, child care (and later on - helping with homework).
If you think that's easy - you are dead wrong. And actually having such a wife feels kinda good if you ask me (I'm not married though). Because coming home to a hot dinner, and not having to worry about stuff like cleaning or washing your clothes yourself is kinda cool.

I'm not married; but, if I were, I'd be happy is the wife stayed home, had a job, or did a hobby all day. I have plenty of money so there'd be no need for a working wife - but it would be her choice as to what she wanted to do during the day.

one of my friends once actually sat down and written down all the work his wife was doing at the time. He then checked how much would it cost to hire people for the same work for the same hours, and it turned out his wife's hour costs more than his. i.e. if he was to pay her an average salary for whatever work she did at home, he wouldn't be able to afford it.
So yea, if you hire some illegal immigrants, you can probably make it cheaper. But I would much rather not invite them to my house, especially when there are children involved. I would much rather my wife - their mom - watched over them, not some stranger.
