With your kind indulgence, I'd like to propose a new challenge

I'd like to suggest the following plan for an October challenge:

Write a poem as a tribute to an historical personality, one who left an indelible mark on humanity, for better or for worse. The identity of this personality should either be super obvious, or better, specified in the title of the poem.

I'll post the poems anonymously and we will comment and rank the poems based on how well the poem finds universal meaning in the life of one individual human, and how successful the poem is overall.

So, what does everyone think? Will this fly?

It has wings.

Yes, definitely.

Well, we have a few important luminaries so far. I hope to attract a little more of a crowd, and then launch in early October.

i'd like to take a shot at this - not a clue where to start, mind....

Darn, history is much harder than science for me, and I tend to favour the zeitgeist approach.

I like the idea very much (especially when I am in my history mood) and once I'm back in England in early October I will be probably returning to that mood also. I think though that it would be good fun not to reveal the personality about whom we write and not make it too obvious by direct reference so the readers can have a go at guessing. What do you think?

Let's try this: if you think your historic person is guessable, go with it. If your figure is more obscure, perhaps undeservedly so, make it easy on the reader and provide the ID.

Well, it looks like we have a substantial crew, ready to write. PM me with your poems, if you please, and I will post them anonymously.

Needless to say, if there is an historical figure whose contribution to universal humanity awakens in you certain romantic thoughts, a little naughtiness in your poem would not be amiss.
