Simian AIDS is a fact. Some humans kill primates (simians) - apes to stupid people. Cut their meat up to eat/sell.

medical advances were not what they were, nor were the means of travel, i believe the first case of monkey to human transfer was in the early 1900s (as known) but with the availability of flights & tourism, it spread before understand of what this disease was happened.
It could have even been sooner than the early 1900s, but with limited mobility, people died off sooner than it could be spread.

People have been dying of AIDS since about 100+ years ago or more. They've done tests and found this out to be true. It just came in the 'radar' in the late 70s actually, or earlier. Sadly they didn't know what it was till it became firmly entrenched in human society.

Things evolve over time. All it would take would be one little "tweak" and the virus mutates from something that gives monkeys a bit of the flu that isn't very contagious into the virulent killer virus we saw in the eighties.
Note: that was a possible example to illustrate my point, not proven fact.

These kinds of things take time to spread widely. It's not like the flu or some virus that's easily spread. It probably got started many decades ago when some bushmeat hunter in Africa accidentally cut himself while butchering a chimpanzee. He may not have transmitted it to anyone else right away, or maybe only to one other person, say his wife. Then eventually another person was infected by either him or his wife. Then another, perhaps years later. Then two more. And on it went, a little at a time for decades, until it eventually exploded into an epidemic, then a pandemic.

I'm going out on a limb to at that AIDS isn't virulent - it's human stupidity that has allowed it to spread. Through drugs, prostitution, unsafe sexual practices and promiscuity - I'm not making judgements, but if someone is having sex with anyone other than along term sexual partner who's sexual health you know without a condom then they're being just plain dumb.
The fact AIDS is t that virulent? Because it's deadly. Mind you all viruses are under the correct circumstances - even the common cold can kill.
The more virulent a virus is the quicker it mutates into something less harmful.
Thousands of years ago the common cold may have been as deadly as Ebola. It's gradual spread and entrenchment into biology made it less of a danger.
Rapidity of spreading and a lower mortality rate are the future of HIV - hopefully like all viruses.
This just takes thousands of years in many cases to happen.
