I was sure you all would come out of the woodwork.

So very disappointed in all of you.

ALL OF YOU!

Everyone presents an edited version of life on social media. People share moments that reflect an ideal life, an ideal self. Hundreds of years ago, we sent letters by horseback, containing only what we wanted the recipient to read. Fifty years ago, we spoke via the telephone, sharing only the details that constructed the self we wanted reflected.

With Instagram, one thing has changed: the amount we consume of one another's edited lives. Young women growing up on Instagram are spending a significant chunk of each day absorbing others' filtered images while they walk through their own realities, unfiltered. In a recent survey conducted by the Girl Scouts, nearly 74 percent of girls agreed that other girls tried to make themselves look "cooler than they are" on social networking sites.

Then, on the evening of Jan. 17, just after dusk settled on the city, Madison took a running leap off the ninth level of a parking garage in downtown Philadelphia.

She was 19 years old.

On Instagram, Madison Holleran's life looked ideal: Star athlete, bright student, beloved friend. But the photos hid the reality of someone struggling to go on.

A really interesting, well-written and sensitive piece. Thank you for posting it.

More and more resilient research is coming out about how the adolescent brain is still forming even up to the early 20s, and in particular that part dealing with long-term planning and the avoidance of instant responses to problems. Combine this with love, sex, hormones...And then consider, as the article does, the paradox that young people seem painfully aware of their own filters on social media - even aware of other people filtering in the abstract - but appear to find it hard to take that into account when judging themselves against others - and you have a toxic mix for young people nowadays.

In Britain, we can add tuition fees, fear and loathing of the young in the tabloid press, and the near-impossibility of getting on the housing ladder or even getting a decent, well-paid job. I wouldn't be 20 years younger for any money. I feel so sorry for today's youngsters, truly.

spiffy pillow saga.

Hunt down special spiffy pillow for aged relative (AR).
We drive out to wherever to get spiffy pillow.
AR tries spiffy pillow, doesn't do what they want, gives it to me.
I try spiffy pillow, and like it. AG gives me spiffy pillow.
AG wants to try spiffy pillow again, I return spiffy pillow.
A few minutes ago AG returns spiffy pillow until tomorrow.
If I am in possession of spiffy pillow by the time my train leaves, it leaves with me somehow.
It's big, I already have the regulation two bags plus, medical device plus electronics, plus whatever.
This ought to be interesting.

Dear Iso Blurt:

Sometimes I misuse you and for that I'm sorry.
Also, I'm gonna do it again. Like the page before with the ADD discussion that cracked me up, or the clever quickness of the Ann's, where you expect it but are surprised anyhow. And the silly self deprecating humour of Gimpy. The oft confusing cleaver. Or the oddly on spot eyer. You surprise me Lit. When I think there's no more surprises to be had, you deliver.

Also. Please let the test be negative. I've got a lot that still needs doing.

Thanks Iso.

You changed your name! When did this happen? I guess I haven't been spending much time here.

Do you stay up all night?!?

I have felt such warmth and acceptance on the GB I thought it time we were on a monosyllabic basis.

I'm just over tired this morning. I built with a pick and shovel, block and concrete and rock and mortar Wednesday, and helped to set up a wind break and put 12 coats of primer on a Chevy Blazer top Thursday.

Hmmm.

Well now I just feel bad.

Also, physical labour does wonders for the mind. I am never more at peace then when working my body.
