Movies!

Glad you enjoyed it!

I watched the movie Dracula Untold. I'm not usually much of an action fan, but I really liked this one. It portrays Dracula as a man with a past and a purpose that makes perfect sense of his "Vlad the Impaler" moniker. There is some supernatural thrown in too, but I like the mix of real man and monster. It was a 90 minute film, but it seemed to fly by ... That never happens for me in an action movie, because I always feel somewhat starved for a story. Not in this one! Loved it :)

I watched Birdman. It was absolutely beautifully shot and cut, but in my opinion it didn't quite live up to the hype. It was a good movie, but I didn't like it, if that makes any sense at all.

In case someone doesn't know, it's a movie about an actor who's trapped by his old role as Birdman and now tries to reinvent and redeem himself on Broadway. The pressure is enormous as he tries to deal with everything putting together a Broadway play entails and he starts to crack in the seams. It's an intense movie, for sure.

I much preferred Nightcrawler. I'd been dodging the movie, because I thought it was yet another Marvel film, but it isn't. It's about a guy who doesn't stop at anything to make it in the world of crime journalism. It's a story about extreme ambition, blurring lines, right and wrong, how far one can go to make it to the top.

They both sound interesting.

My son is insisting I watch the Hobbit movies. So far I've seen the first two and meh.

I do enjoy time with my son however!

:D

20 Feet from Stardom is a documentary about backup singers. It was really a fascinating look inside the music industry, a story about passion, dignity and music in general, too. It won the Best Documentary Oscar last year.

I also watched Sixteen Candles yesterday. It was every bit as awesome as I remembered. Pretty in Pink is on the watchlist next. :)

Ooh, eighties revival?
We saw a documentary about those movies a while ago and were reminded of a lot of them, like Breakfast Club.
My favourite was Rumble Fish.

20 Feet from Stardom was excellent! When I was younger I dreamed of being a backup singer. I had no desire to be a star, but I thought it would be cool to sing harmonies on studio albums, etc.

I didn't watch the Oscars last night, but having read the results I think I'd like to watch Grand Budapest Hotel, simply because it won for best costuming.

I think I'd like to see 20 Feet From Stardom and Grand Budapest Hotel as well.

Grand Budapest Hotel was good. The costumes and the whole world of the movie was absolutely delightful. Eye candy. :)

Breakfast Club is naturally on the watchlist as well, and St. Elmo's Fire. I didn't grow up with the 80s movies, but I've still seen the classics often enough, that they're really comforting to rewatch. Rumble Fish is good as well, as is The Outsiders, both based on S. E. Hinton's books.

Yes, I remember The Outsiders too.
I think it was Mickey Rourkes fault that Rumble Fish was the favourite.

When we saw the documentary, I realized that a lot of those movies that I think of as being from the same time are actually years apart. Probably because I didn't see them until my friend's parent finally got a VCR in the late eighties and we did our best to watch everything in the video rental store.

I want to see it too. I read the book and really liked it. I expect to get Alzheimer's Disease, btw.

It's going to mess with my head big time, but I really want to see Julianne Moore in Still Alice.

Glad to hear it was good.

I liked The Breakfast Club but don't remember much about St. Elmo's Fire though I saw it.

Read the book for a teen book club I was advisor for a couple of years ago, then watched the movie. I liked the book but the movie though okay wasn't as good. Movies almost never are as good as the books though, right?

Breakfast Club was filmed at a high school located only about 5 miles from my home. I pass its location (it's been closed since before filming of the movie happened) a couple times each month.

Edge of Tomorrow is pretty good. I still like Ground Hog Day better but, yeah . . .

:rose:

Big Hero 6 was pretty cute.

The latest Night at the Museum was good too.

What About Bob is funnier now than when it came out. To me at least.

'Snowpiercer'
OMG! My son saw it in the theaters, he's the movie knerd around here. He insisted we watch over brunch and I think I lost half my life.
It's amazing, bad, good, sad, funny, just insane.
I was shocked by the fact that I hadn't even heard about it, not even a trailer for it. It's the 'Arrested Development' of movies. So under promoted, it's odd.

Sounds intense.

I thought Snowpiercer was pretty good too, but it didn't come close to my favorite movies I saw last year. Definitely one of the best scifi movies I saw last year, though. At least here it was quite well promoted and most people who are into that genre know it.

I finally watched the last Hobbit movie. It was very meh.

I watched Big Hero 6.
It's a Disney film, and come on, I mean, they are always good, right?
That said, it's pretty formulaic. I still enjoyed it :)
A genius kid who doesn't know what to do with his life is influenced by a science project that his older brother creates. As I said, formulaic, but still entertaining.

I agree. I've also been pondering just how Disney stays so firmly on top lately. I mean seriously.
