The Official Author's Hangout 2014 Winter Holidays Contest Support Thread

I quit the comic around #50 and haven't bothered with the show.

I'm not a fan of zombies and the comic was getting to graphic for my taste. I keep my vices separate. I read comics for escapism. If I want graphic violence and rape and torture I'll....read the LW section here.

Touché :D

I never read the comic. From what I've heard, the TV show only loosely follows the comics. You should give it a shot. Though bear in mind in the first season characters do some really stupid things that will have you scratching your head.

They do indeed, don't they? :)

I watch "Walking Dead" but haven't read the comics except for the first issue or two that a friend of mine lent me. But I've read the same -- they've left out characters from the comics and made up others for the show, namely Daryl (Yay, Daryl!).

In retrospect I give the characters a bit of a pass on the initial stupid decisions -- in TWD world, there were no fictional zombies, so they had to learn from the ground up what to do.

I think this season is the best so far.

But back to the topic, I can't say it's too Christmas-y ;)

Now its winter themed.:D

As the zombies moved towards the compound, a light snowfall began. Their shuffling gate soon proved an advantage, providing surprisingly stable footing on the icy ground, while their outstretched arms provided balance.
An eery sound soon reached the surviving humans. As the undead drew closer, inhuman voices could be heard and a oddly familiar tune.
"All of the zombie reindeers
Used to groan
And call for brains.
Then they all got distracted
By an Abominable's dental pains."

A gate is something you open, a "gait" is how someone would walk" Get a proof reader Pffffttttt!"

Sorry, I just wanted to make your story more realistic.....;)

Dear Anonymous,
Thanks for the suggestion.
In case you're unaware, a "shuffling gate" - in parts of the Plains and upper Midwest - is a type of portable fence used as a hand rail in icy or slippery conditions.
You didn't know that? Pfft. Pfft.

Yeah, you tell that jerk!

At last

Finally got my winter story submitted. Whew.

Every time I start a story thinking one thing it takes off in a whole different direction. That's not so bad when not writing for a theme but it plays hell trying to meet a deadline. I better start my Valentines entry now, ha, ha, ha. Or should I say, "ho, ho, ho."

Bah... I've got a really good storyline, but I just can't gather up the energy to write. In another one of my motivation slumps.

With a Thanksgiving theme, this one goes into the "Next Year" folder at this point. I doubt I could finish it even with a marathon writing session, and certainly couldn't get it properly edited.

Probably toss some ideas at the wall for an RR quickie. With all the time off I have between now and the end of the contest, I might be able to manage that.

sr71plt is one of my favorite writers here. I have a hard time believing he gets vicious or shallow comments, considering the volumes of work he has done. Yet...I threw out my own first two stories and found this place to be cruel. I stopped my first foray because of the nastiness I caught, before I got to the deeper plot. My second attempt, I refuse to listen to detractors. I'm going to do all of the story. i currently have three (3) whole fans. I'm going to finish it just for them.

sr71plt. Thank you for your great work. It was you and two others that made me want to post my stories here.

Good luck. I look forward to reading it.

I think everyone gets vicious comments here at times; I'm more disappointed with my one contest entry that has no comments at all.
Definitely do all of your story, without regard to naysayers, if it's of value to you. I would suggest doing it for yourself rather than for your three fans will produce better work: anything with any originality will probably piss off at least one fan, and writing to cater to them will most likely not produce your best work.
Write what you love, the fans (and comments both fair and foul) will follow.

Not entirely happy, but submitted anyway. 12k - a bit longer than planned. Have absolutely no idea how it will do. Probably a bit more story than some would want.

I'm also working on a short romance piece which is currently just over 3k.

Readers' scoring is a mystery wrapped in an enigma

I've given up trying to guess ahead of time what will be liked and what not. I was very pleased with my story for the Christmas contest and while the scores are reasonable, it's currently scoring less than the first story I ever submitted! I have had some lovely feedback comments though.

So, absolutely right: I'm going to write what I love and for my own enjoyment and let readers enjoy it as they will!

Everyone gets vicious and shallow comments here. The trick is to either ignore them or learn to laugh at them and focus on the good comments we all get.

You shouldn't let others determine if you're going to write here or not. Sad thing is there are far more positive posters than negative ones, but they are the most persistent and stick out.

I've figured it out.

If I like it.....forget it.

If I think meh....it does well.

Are you suggesting writers are perverse? The very idea!

Of course we're not!

We write good wholesome stories.

The problem is readers and their dirty interpretations.

Example

"Oh, a facial?" Jenny sighed, "I love facials."

"Holy shit, you love cum on your face?" Bill asked.

"Don't be a pig," Jenny said disgustedly, "I was talking about the spa."

See?

I dunno... some of the things I've written were clearly meant to be dirty and perverse. ;)

Oh, and I love facials too.
