Yesterday was one of those sometimes. More to the point last night was one of those sometimes. I got home from work about 12:30 this morning, the family, including the dogs, were all still up doing whatever it is they do while I'm at work. I changed into my comfy bedtime wear, chat with the hubs for a few minutes then head off to bed. I snuggled down into my bed of insane thread count sheets I couldn't really afford, but bought anyway, topped with my favorite fluffery blanket and began to drift off the sleep. That's when it happened.
Somewhere in the fog of asleep-but-not-quite, I hear thundering akin to hooves attached to very large creatures who have a tendency to stampede. Then out of the fog came yelling, and cursing, and just as my almost asleep brain registered that this was not a dream, all 3 dogs bailed into my bed. The Hubs was right on their heels, still yelling and cursing. Just as my ears deciphered his words, my nose deciphered the reason. Skunk. My 3 precious, yet, rambunctious pups, had found a friend who had no desire to be friends with them, and they reeked of their potential friend's insistence there was no friendship to be had.
Sleeping had to be put off for a while to see which pup got the worst of it (one always does, and when this happens, the other 2 run just out of principle). We tried to minimize the stench, which permeated the path from the back door to the bedroom, change the sheets, and regain something that might pass for normalcy in this chaos. And this is why I sometimes have a difficult time loving my dogs.
