Logged into Facebook for my quarterly "Delete All Notifications and Oh God Why Do I Still Have This Thing" party and learned that a friend from high school passed away. Thirty. Lupus. Fuck :(

Very sorry to read....

Not so sure about those pancakes I made with almond meal...

Okay this week, I will get myself together, answer emails, pms, write his dad, clear my desk and finish my taxes. The fact that I will get to hear Al Stewart play twice and see a lot of old friends will not interfere with this plan at all ;).

Now that it seems I am back to hanging laundry, I will have to plan better and maybe get some more undergarments made. Ugh...

I am getting more used to you being gone but I miss you horribly. Like your mom said "all the time, more and more each day"

Will watch Homeland, just not good at watching shows without you.

Hugs.
I am so sorry. Lupus is horrible.

Facebook obits seem more and more common, at least in my world. :(

Thanks, t. So am I. She spent 100+ pain-filled days in the hospital until her death. Just awful :( We didn't stay close after university and hadn't spoken in years, but she was a lovely, special person and the world was lucky to have her. My heart goes out to and breaks for her family.

We met through speech and debate (nerds) and the schools are organizing a memorial tournament in her honor. I think she'd love that. Hope I'll be able to pitch in somehow.

You'll do just fine.

this is the time I miss you most, awake at 3am listening for your voice, you had the most amazing voice

If I only listened to the news and didn't actually research the info, then I would believe that Ebola is knocking on my door and I should cover all windows in plastic and duct tape before it strikes me.

I don't know why they seem to want to start a panic.

well its not complety absurd. its killed many people in a short period of time, was more widespread than they initially thought, and is a potentially fatal illness. and the lack of proper travel and infectious disease controls hasn't helped build public confidence.

while its best to err on the side of caution, news outlets *do* tend to over-dramatize things, like dumbasses.

I think that because of the (unfounded) panic over AIDS people are loathe to stigmatize ill people.

This isn't AIDS. Doctors and Nurses being really really careful have died. They are certainly not sharing needles or having sex with the patients. This is MUCH more communicable than most diseases and one of the quickest killers.

From the WHO:

People can be exposed to Ebola virus from direct physical contact with body fluids like blood, saliva, stool, urine, sweat etc. of an infected person and soiled linen used by a patient. It can be spread through contact with objects, such as needles, that have been contaminated with infected secretions

The only reason that this isn't cause for world-wide panic is because it IS so rapid onset, and so likely to kill the majority of an entire small village. For the most part, sick people are down hard so fast that they tend not to go on extended walk-abouts.

It hits a poor, highly congested section of a major metropolitan city and this is going to rack up a huge body count.

It's obviously The Only Thing That Matters (this week anyway) to certain types of folks (*cough*Toubab*cough*)

i was monitoring the news about it mostly because there were 2 possible cases in this area, 1 at a hospital a few blocks from my work and another a few miles from my home.

luckily, both were ruled out over the weekend.
