Predicting the weather

Prove me wrong. Its a discussion.

Climate changes every day, can't dispute that. But predicting the weather more than 1 week out is ususally wrong, and long range forcasts are even more incorrect.Making social policy on theory is dangerous.

I live in Orlando. I'll predict the weather for the summer of 2015. Highs in the low to mid 90's, very humid, clear in the mornings & a strong chance of scattered storms in the afternoon.

Climate can't change every day, only the weather can.

When did he say that?

Out of service in the early '50s due to a receding glacier......

And everybody were happy about it too:

The Railways: At a cost of approximately $36,000 a year, the Loop was expensive to maintain. A new route would eliminate repairs to five Loop bridges, a snow shed and one tunnel. It would no longer be necessary to maintain a heating plant and two watchmen at the tunnel. It would also take the mainline away from a treacherous snow slide area."

The army: "The Army also had an interest in eliminating the Loop since they felt it was very vulnerable to sabotage."

The engineers: "As resident engineer Cliff Fugelstaad remembers it, "The trestles were getting pretty shaky. We breathed a sigh of relief when we got off of them.""

The tourist associations: "The reason they wanted it down is because the tourists would get up there and walk out and take pictures. The liability became too great. They decided they better get the thing down. There was 'No Trespassing' signs, but that don't mean anything."

And the place looks a lot better without that structure. So a total win for everybody. :)

Is that still there? That photo looks like it's from the late 1800's or the early 1900's.

Pretty much all made out of wood, too. Engineering structures from the old-timey industrial and pre-atomic age are fascinating. I keep thinking about all the safety measures in place now that didn't exist back then. People died working on those shits but they had to get it done for progress' sake. If you caught an L working on something like that back then, it was like, welp, them's the breaks, pally.

At least you looked. Still, the glacier receded when others were advancing.

Did you know Cliff? Good guy. A pile of kids. Lived off Campbell Airstrip Road.

Some folks LIKE the view!

Never been there - just quoted from railway historical texts. :)

However considering the time-frame the changes in the glacier must have taken place between the two world wars. In other words, if human civilization was indeed the cause, it was an entirely different society compared to the one we live in today.

My mom rode the train on that loop.

Everything is changing.

Greenhouse gas levels rising at fastest rate since 1984
By Matt McGrath Environment correspondent, BBC News

Concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere between 2012 and 2013 grew at their fastest rate since 1984.

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) says that it highlights the need for a global climate treaty.

But the UK's energy secretary Ed Davey said that any such agreement might not contain legally binding emissions cuts, as has been previously envisaged.

The WMO's annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin doesn't measure emissions from power station smokestacks but instead records how much of the warming gases remain in the atmosphere after the complex interactions that take place between the air, the land and the oceans.

According to the bulletin, the globally averaged amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached 396 parts per million (ppm) in 2013, an increase of almost 3ppm over the previous year.

"The Greenhouse Gas Bulletin shows that, far from falling, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere actually increased last year at the fastest rate for nearly 30 years," said Michel Jarraud, secretary general of the WMO.

"We must reverse this trend by cutting emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases across the board," he said. "We are running out of time."

Atmospheric CO2 is now at 142% of the levels in 1750, before the start of the industrial revolution.

there is no man caused planetary warming... it only exists in the minds of those who wish to control people... by passing legislation to hinder progress... and restrict growth... the ghastly greenies...

You are one stupid son of a bitch.

Dear friends,

I can sincerely say this is the most important petition we've ever done.

Sorry for the language, but one top scientist just warned that we are all "f*cked" if global warming releases gigantic amounts of methane gas from the arctic tundra. The UN knows this is one of several catastrophic climate threats we're facing, and is bringing world leaders to New York for a major summit on this global emergency.

Hundreds of thousands of us will take to the streets for the People’s Climate March just before the summit. Let’s make sure that on that day we deliver the largest Avaaz petition ever, for the only solution: mobilize the world to shift to 100% clean energy.

Click to sign the petition below with one click and tell everyone:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/100_clean_final/?bIiJvbb&signup=1&cl=5762063779&v=44869

Here's the petition:

To national, local, and international leaders:
Scientists warn us that climate change could accelerate beyond our control, threatening our survival and everything we love. We call on you to keep global temperature rise under the unacceptably dangerous level of 2 degrees C, by phasing out carbon pollution to zero. To achieve this, you must urgently forge realistic global, national and local agreements, to rapidly shift our societies and economies to 100% clean energy by 2050. Do this fairly, with support to the most vulnerable among us. Our world is worth saving and now is our moment to act. But to change everything, we need everyone. Join us.

Sign it with one click here:

Whether it's the 'arctic methane bomb', the rapid acidification of our oceans, or apocalyptic flooding, climate change is the biggest threat humanity is facing, and we need the biggest petition ever to meet it. If we make it massive, the number of us who sign will be read out to all leaders at the summit, published in hundreds of media articles, and be delivered by our marches worldwide.

100% clean energy is a realistic goal. Already, 20% of the world's electricity comes from clean energy, and solar power is cheaper than coal in many countries! We just need to get our leaders to agree to put their foot on the accelerator.

We're gearing up for the largest climate mobilization in history on September 21. Already hundreds of events are organised and hundreds of thousands of people signed up. But the events are designed to deliver our petition to decision makers. Let's make it the largest call to action ever. Join now and tell everyone - sign the petition with one click below:

We're all different, and beautifully diverse. But whoever and wherever we are, climate change threatens everything we love, and brings all of us together. Let's come together now.

With hope,

Ricken, Danny, Lisa, Judy, Alex, Iain, and the rest of the Avaaz team

These climate change threads are always a kick. Both sides sling the same insults at the opposing side.

But:

Obviously the Earth is getting warmer.
Obviously there will be costs associated with that.

The cause of the warming is irrelevant.
One way or another, either by the pro-warming side or the anti-warming side, money will be spent.

The folks foaming at the mouth to do nothing remind me of the investors in Acme Buggy Whip Mfc., Inc.

Whether you invest in companies that build seawalls and pumps, or scrubbers, there are investment opportunities that will come - even if you decide to keep your head in the sand.

~~~\
Some accuracies there, but you miss the suffering and hardship caused by these fanatics.
Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere is not even a small problem, but billions and billions of dollars are being spent in sequestration schemes, and yes, people get rich from it, meanwhile, the wasted money increases taxation, lowers the living standard of the poor, and accomplishes nothing.
Further, profitable businesses that offer needed consumables to the general public and taxed and regulated and controlled to the point where their products must be priced higher. again placing a burden on the lower class to put food on the table.
Like FDR paying people to dig holes and fill them in again and calling it employment; government subsidies for ethanol, solar, wind, bio diesel, et cetera, provides jobs that are equally useless and non productive, and yes, insider knowledge gives government favored industries a leg up in investment strategies.
The entire global warming scam produces nothing tangible and hurts those at the very bottom... but no matter, the Left is happy to tax more and give more food tamps and welfare as they plod towards a true socialist state where everyone is equally poor and miserable.
There seems to be no limit to the amount of taxation, even when it forces corporate business to flee to lower tax havens to survive.
and they still don't get it.... actually, they do get it... impoverish the nation until it becomes a police state.
I see why you choose not to have children and start families...
amicus the realist...:rose:
That's because we all know that the ice caps are actually growing.
Only the Cap'n Trade pirates think otherwise.
See:
http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/
I am new here, but I sense that science is not popular around here. I could be wrong, of course.
~~~

Welcome aboard and good luck... they will read only the source and attempt to reject it for one reason or another... so... to perhaps at least catch their wandering eye and cause a reflexive gulp... from your link:

"The Arctic summer of 2014 is nearing an end. Overall, the rate of ice loss during August was near average. Regions of low concentration ice remain in the Beaufort and East Siberian seas that may yet melt out or compress by wind action. While the Northwest Passage continues to be clogged with ice and is unlikely to open, the Northern Sea Route along the Siberian coasts appears open except for some ice around Severnaya Zemlya. As the end of the southern winter draws closer, Antarctic sea ice extent remains higher than average.

...Sea ice extent in August 2014 averaged 6.22 million square kilometers (2.40 million square miles). This is 1.00 million square kilometers (386,000 square miles) below the 1981 to 2010 August average, but well above the 2012 August average of 4.71 million square kilometers (1.82 million square miles). Extent was below average throughout the Arctic except for a region in the Barents Sea, east of Svalbard. The ice edge continued to retreat north of the Laptev Sea, and is now within 5 degrees latitude of the North Pole...."

~~~
At the root of the scam is the acquired hatred of man and progress and the post industrial cornucopia of modern civilization. They would rather have the agricultural age of the labor of human backs rather than the modern era of machines and technology.
They would also rather have a King to bow to, but will be satisfied with a Commissar to tell them how to live their miserable lives.
The true burden of human freedom is just to much for them...
thanks for your Post...
