I own a 12 gauge (and yes, it nearly knocks me down), a .22 rifle with a scope, and a small caliber, semi-automatic handgun. I inherited all of them from my dad (okay, actually my mom put them in my car after my dad died and she sold the house, because she didn't know what else to do with them and she didn't want them herself).

I think the small guns are kinda fun for plinking around with cans and such, and I know how to use the shotgun too, but I don't carry them around with me. Just never felt the need to. Maybe it's because I grew up a small town girl. It doesn't bother me if other people want to, though.
