Funny...we just stuck a barcode on our public affairs specialist yesterday.
All state IDs/DLs now fall under the purview of the RealID Act, which was/is an amendment to the Patriot Act...
...its purpose is to form a formal national database which includes everyone who holds a state ID/DL.
It's a workaround to the solution of a national ID card: the political support is not present enough - yet - for every person in this country to voluntarily submit to obtaining a national government-issued ID card, so the same goal can be practically accomplished by mandating that all state identification information is funneled into the RealID Act's database.
Not wishing to voluntarily submit to the RealID Act is the prime reason I haven't obtained a state ID/DL in any state since my last one expired in 2008 - I'm fully politically opposed to any form of national government ID's totally Orwellian purpose...
...the cost to me for such a stance is that I cannot legally drive and I'm without a piece of ID required for me - a natural born citizen of the United States of America - to now be legally employed in the United Socialist State of America.
Meanwhile, while such legalities are supremely relevant to me as a patriot...
...consider the millions and millions and millions of non-citizens folks now in this country without any documentation at all, working their butts off (a lot of them) for so-called reputable employers who are in full violation of the employment law(s).
The entire situation is a friggin' joke...
...if it's affect wasn't so draconian to the natural individual liberty of all human beings.
I am inherently opposed to any attempt by the national government to create a formal identity registry of Americans, and I am inherently against restricting in any way the freedom of all human beings to wander where they wish...
...as long as they commit no crime against another individual as they do so.
