Your alarmist editorial writer picks a random year from the dot-com boom and compares the number of publicly-traded companies then against the number of publicly traded companies now and decides that Oh Noe, Doom and Gloom Is At Hand.

Basic fear-mongering 101, but it plays well to your confirmation bias, no?

Then he laments that small-cap companies are richly valued, which they probably are, and there is significant risk in investing any more money in them, so investors are being "forced" to invest in riskier vehicles (coz bond yields are at historic lows) in order to make the high returns they demand.

I don't see a problem here.

We're not going to see another dot-com boom anytime soon, and investors are going to have to modify their expectations, or alternatively take on higher risks for potentially higher returns.

Unlike your pal Vetty's core belief, there is no such thing as a guaranteed return in the stock market.
