I have an odd ability to be able to place most US accents within hundred or two miles of a person's hometown. You'd be surprised how much information lives in vowel pronunciation. But there are times where nothing about their accent places them in any one place. In those cases, almost every time, either dad was in the army and they moved every two years, or one or both parents was from another country/region.

You're obviously Australian. Your mom had a Vietnamese accent. You don't. But her accent, either slight or severe, is contained somewhere in yours. No big mystery there.

In other words, it doesn't mean Stephen King killed John Lennon.

BUT!

I spell "mom" American style. Obviously I'm also secretly an American!

I randomly drop "u"s out of honor and favourite. Favorite! Wait is that even a thing? Can you spell it without the "u"?

My problem is when I'm exposed to things I pick them up and it becomes this terrible mongrel blend of "My mom told me to honour her wishes, STREWTH!"


Actually yeah, I do have the faintest trace of Asian in my accent, you don't typically pick it up unless you listen for it. I spoke to Tang God years ago on the phone and I think he was the first person ever who noticed I had it.

I was a debater for about 10 years, that did train me to speak precisely but it doesn't entirely explain it either because a lot of my friends debate.

Probably too much pride and prejudice growing up.

I try to mimic the English accent sometimes because I have a few English friends at work and I wanted to make fun of them but they just laughed at me cos I sounded stupid.
