Checking On New Story Status

image.php

Some story categories, for various reasons, need more thorough checking than others.

The boss, sadly, has departed. But he did get a chuckle out of LAUREL'S answer to the sayhey kids question about why Incest and NC stories are at the bottom of the New Story page.

You'll notice she didn't actually answer the question. Instead inferred that these categories need more checking and therefore fall to the bottom. Yeah right!

The reality (learned after some six years of ScouriesWorld observations) is as follows. The QUEEN follows the following rules:

RULE #1: SamuelX's stories are always last on the New Story page. She just hates the guy.

RULE #2: Non Consent stories are almost always last. Even though she's emasculated the category (no "rape" in the title, not too much violence, the girl must ultimately like it, etc.) she simply doesn't like rape stories and really wishes she didn't have to have them on the site. However, having already banned bestiality and every kiss from anyone under 18, she realises she can't ban everything.

RULE #3: Put Incest stories down as far as you can get away with. Unlike the rape stories she doesn't really mind incest ones. At first, many years ago, it was just another category. Treated pretty much like all the others. But then it grew. And grew. Until it became the elephant in the room.

And slowly the site she loves became increasingly known as an Incest story site. Its now reached the point where over 70% of the views are Incest story views. Which has damaged somewhat her view of herself and the site as a home of literate erotica.

She's now between a rock and a hard place. Incest draws the viewers and the money. So now every day you have to scroll down through ten or fifteen categories before you get to Incest. Sliding the new incest stories down the page as far as she can is simply her small protest against their dominant role.

We're big boys and girls LAUREL. You know you can tell it like it really is...

Well if Incest is responsible for 70% of the views here then it being last on the story page isn't really hurting it, now is it?

As for rape, all that need be done is to drop the words Non consent and people would stop submitting rape stories.

"Non consent" makes people think those stories are accepted here. And many make it through the approval process.

Another site has an identical "person must enjoy it/no sexual violence" rule and their section is simply "reluctance"

they also have a "rough sex" category for as hard as you like it, no holds barred, CONSENSUAL sex.

That would be a nice fix, because many people enjoy reluctance, but not non con and because so many rape stories get through we don't look there because we get tired of stumbling into them.

For new stories, the comments are broken, or have been for the last 3 days. Yes, it's probably some kind of cache issue, but it's relatively new. I never had this problem to this extent before.

Comments are added, the last five show up under the story. The numbers are tracked. Show all comments only shows the first few, even two days later. My story had 120 comments and I could only see the first seven, and latest five for two days, without going through my author submission page.

The Last Tritan, currently has 29 comments. Show all comments lists 3.

I had a notice on my newest story saying a comment had been removed by the administrator. I realize it's probably spam, but it does make me curious. I've never had that happen before.

I thought I was you?

How can I be Pilot if I'm you?

Actually I thought you were dark.

I believe you may have misunderstood the boss. He was trying to point out that lovergirl/ace thread arguments closely resembled the LAUREL/ace argument on this thread.

Which wouldn't mean you were ace it would mean you were ... dare I say it...

Every story in the contest so far has been spammed, I believe.

It's becoming a rather common occurrence. I've deleted several in the recent past, and received the notification that others have been removed before I saw them.

Shhhhh!

You want your next royalty check, you better keep quiet!

How can you tell when scouries is lying? His fingers are moving.

His scouriesfantasyworld observations are much like everyone else but a lot more paranoid. Everything and everyone is a conspiracy. Actually, it's just more of his hate and discontent where this site is concerned.

All he really wants to know is the way the sweeps work so he can go back to trying to game the system.

Hey authorly and readerly type, I need your help. If you're seeing an issue with comments not functioning as expected, could you send me this information via PM as soon as possible?

I need a link/URL to the page where the issue is happening, and a brief description of what is going wrong (doesn't show the expected number of comments, won't load, etc.)

PLEASE send this to me via PM so that I can pass this on asap and get this bug fixed soon.

Thank you! :rose: :rose: :rose:

Sent a PM. Problem exists on every comment listed at RECENT ACTIVITY.

PMd links to all of mine, and sent along links to the two that TTT and jennyb reported as well.

On TTTs, all the comments now appear on the page. On Waterburn's ( the one jennyb reported ) there are comments showing from as late as today, but not all of them.

More details in the PM.

Tested it, and it looks like the problem had been 90% fixed. The only issues now is the 'All Comments' list lags a few behind, but those can be found at the bottom of the last page.

I checked several of the lastest stories to verify it.

Thanks all for the comments sent in PM and here. :rose: It's being investigated as we speak and hopefully should be fixed soon.

TTT - as for your other post:

- Yes, the Similar Stories was put in for that reason - another form of story discovery. We also have the Story Spinner, which does get used. The reality is that the New Pages and Categories are just not helpful enough with an archive this size that grows 75-100 stories a day. This is why we're implementing things like tags, better search, the Hubs, and eventually Reader Lists.

It's also why we are less likely to create new Categories, because over time Categories have grown less important.

But yeah, there are many older stories which are poorly tagged. I have a list of some tens of thousands of stories which I whittle away at every day in between my other stuff. One thing we have on the drawing board is to allow Reader Tags, so that readers can help sort stories in ways that other readers can find them. These will require moderation on our part, but I think they'll be very helpful because readers know what readers are looking for.

The delay in syncing scores sitewide is, unfortunately, unavoidable at this point. Lit loads extremely fast for a site its size, and part of that is because we cache some pages. Were we to update every page in real time every time someone loaded it, our site would crawl. Right at the moment, there appears to be a caching problem which we're looking into. And I think there should be a page (say, the logged-in author page) which is updated in real time where you can view your stats. But I don't know if that's feasible. I'll talk to the Manu and the developer about that.

A lot of what's not intuitive now will hopefully be solved once we make live what I feel are the Big 2: New Page Headers and Footers, and New Member Profiles. The former is close to being launched, I think. The latter is in the works, and will include the ability to send out notifications to all logged-in members about various things - site issues, upcoming contests, etc. Launching those will lead to sitewide Private Messaging on the story side, as well as a way for authors to send out notes to their subscribers.

All this takes time - some more, some less. I'll admit I get more than a little frustrated sometimes. Then I talked to a guy I know who is in the management of a much bigger mainstream site than ours, and he was complaining about how long it takes changes to be implemented. He has literally dozens of programmers at his disposal, yet every tweak takes months to go live. That made me feel a little better. :D

Issue with comments has been found and fixed. It may take 12 hours before the pages reset, but after that there should be no issues. If you see the same problem, please PM me with links to the pages where you see it. Thanks to everyone for the help! :rose:

Laurel, thank you so much for finding and fixing this. We look forward to the upgrades you have been mentioning. Do you think either will happen within a year, or are they further out than that?

Jenny

Seems to work perfectly now. Thanks so much.

Just want to mention, you don't know how much I, for one, appreciate your increased presence lately. I know you're exceedingly busy, but the communications, Manu's notice in the Site announcements, the open discussion of a bug that was quickly fixed, it's all for the good. Don't think we haven't noticed the effort to chew through the submitted stories backlog either.

Thanks for everything.

I have a question for Laurel. Why is a story that's had the score adjusted to remove 1 bombs, not put back on the top lists in its proper position. The story still shows the devalued score. The lists don't seem to be updated.

The incest top lists are a mess. The #1 all time story is also listed as the #1 on the 12 month list even though its 2 years old.

The story I have on the list is listed at 2400 votes. The story now has 3400 so that info is close to a year old.

The toplists have been doing some strange things lately. It seems most prevalent in the higher-traffic categories.

I reported the utterly broken first page of the Incest all-time toplist a while back when people started mentioning it, and reiterated it in the process of narrowing down the problem with the comments this time.

What someone speculated, but I was unable to confirm, was that the score/position of stories will only change when the number of votes exceeds the number of votes from the previous listing on the toplist.

So, if your story is swept, it will only reflect its new score and position once you have more votes than you did before the sweep - and only once those pages reach an update cycle, which appears to be about once every 24 hours.

Needless to say, in some categories such as Loving Wives, it can take you a long time to regain enough votes to make up for the malicious votes that were swept.

Specific examples are the only way anyone is going to be able to figure this out. The more information, the better.

What is the story that's incorrectly listed? When was it swept? Where is it currently on the toplist?

Anything you have can help track down the bug. Stories in LW, Non-Con, and Incest are the most likely to have this phenomenon, if the theory suggested is correct.

( The first page of the all-time incest list excluded. That's a completely different animal. For some reason, it completely quit updating over a year ago. Stories found on page 1 can also be found on page 2 with more than 1k higher vote totals. So examples that point to that particular page will accomplish nothing )

If people can provide the examples and information, I can try to distill it down and present it in such a way that may help the code gnomes burrow down and find it.

I strongly suspect that this is an odd cache issue, much like what was happening with the comments.

I notice the 30 day lists seem to be very accurate across the board.

But from 30 to 12 things go haywire.

My last incest story(before the contest) was #1 on the 30 day list for a good part of the month. It then left that list on schedule, but now does not show up on the 12 month list at all.

Okay, so the 12 month list on Incest is broken as well?

I'll look at that and see if I can mine any data out of it. I wasn't aware that it had gone wonky.

EDIT: It's exactly the same as the all-time list for the category. That alone could help narrow down the issue.

I have things like that happening in Celebs where I am. My score was adjusted to remove 1 bombs and went back to a 5.00 and at twelve votes, yet it shows up on the 12 month list at the bombed score still.

Crap dude, I am a simpleton. I haven't experienced any of these defuncts, but I just think that's because I don't utilize all those features on the site all the time. I just sorta post stories and read others and vote and comment.

Specific story title ( link better ), when it was swept ( even approximately ) will help.

If it's either of these:

http://www.literotica.com/s/redwood-nine-season-02-ch-08

http://www.literotica.com/s/redwood-nine-season-02-ch-10

I'm seeing them both at 5.0 with 12 votes on the 12 month. They wouldn't show up on the all-time toplist at all, because the all-time list has a minimum number of votes ( likely 100 ) before a story will appear there.
