Cops allowed Trayvon demonstrators to seize control of major street for three hours

One of the questions to emerge out of last night’s unrest in Oakland, where crowds protesting the George Zimmerman verdict turned violent and seized control of a major street for three hours, is why police withdrew from the area and allowed drivers to be terrorized.

According to a report by ABC 7, protesters had “complete control” of 14th and Broadway near Oakland City Hall and refused to let vehicles pass.


At about 8:30 p.m., police opened the intersection to traffic. But it quickly deteriorated when demonstrators surrounded frightened drivers who found themselves trapped. The crowd forced them to turn around.

Oakland police officers that had been near the corner retreated, leaving the helpless drivers without police protection. It’s unclear who gave that command.

In Los Angeles, demonstrators also blocked major highways and acted provocatively towards drivers.



Occupy Oakland is now calling on demonstrators to repeat the stunt tonight, while subtly encouraging violence by mentioning smashing courthouse windows and telling people to wear all black.

What was described in Oakland last night resembles to a lesser degree the scene below from the 1992 LA riots during which agitators attacked drivers and attempted to pull them out of their vehicles as police stood down.

During the Rodney King riots, police were ordered by their superiors to avoid attempting to quell the disorder so as not to escalate the cycle of violence.

“Critics say the police gave up when the riots erupted, letting big chunks of Los Angeles burn while looters and hoodlums ruled,” reports Blackisonline.

This “stand down” order could hardly have been justified in the context of reducing violence given that 53 people died during the riots and 2,000 were injured.

We hope that scenes such as those witnessed last night in Oakland and Los Angeles remain limited and that police don’t allow them to escalate by standing back and doing nothing, thereby encouraging other criminal elements to hijack the protests as an excuse for disorder and looting

Anger over the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin has stretched all the way from Sanford, Florida to Syria, where residents of a besieged town weighed in on the verdict Monday.

“Martin family!,” reads a sign drawn up by the rebels in the Syrian town of Kafr Anbel, part of the Syrian city of Idlib. “The Syrians are the best who know what it’s like to lose loved ones by immune criminals.”

The northwestern Syrian town, known as the “the creative center of the revolt,” has been making sardonic signs mocking Syrian President Bashar al Assad and his regime for years. Other signs have lashed out at the U.N. for failing to stop the bloodshed in Syria Syrian bloodshed as well as the foreign countries aiding Assad, such as Russia, Iran, and North Korea.

A photo of rebels holding the Trayvon Martin sign was posted on the Facebook page of activist Raed Fares, who explained why the people of Kafr Anbel are making these signs, which are directed at western audiences via social media.

“It’s very important to send our message to all the world,” he said. “And English is the public language.”

The February 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martion might never have happened if school officials in Miami-Dade County had not instituted an unofficial policy of treating crimes as school disciplinary infractions. Revelations that emerged from an internal affairs investigation explain why Martin was not arrested when caught at school with stolen jewelry in October 2011 or with marijuana in February 2012. Instead, the teenager was suspended from school, the last time just days before he was shot dead by George Zimmerman.

Trayvon Martin was not from Sanford, the town north of Orlando where he was shot in 2012 and where a jury acquitted Zimmerman of murder charges Saturday. Martin was from Miami Gardens, more than 200 miles away, and had come to Sanford to stay with his father’s girlfriend Brandy Green at her home in the townhouse community where Zimmerman was in charge of the neighborhood watch. Trayvon was staying with Green after he had been suspended for the second time in six months from Krop High School in Miami-Dade County, where both his father, Tracy Martin, and mother, Sybrina Fulton, lived.

Both of Trayvon’s suspensions during his junior year at Krop High involved crimes that could have led to his prosecution as a juvenile offender. However, Chief Charles Hurley of the Miami-Dade School Police Department (MDSPD) in 2010 had implemented a policy that reduced the number of criiminal reports, manipulating statistics to create the appearance of a reduction in crime within the school system. Less than two weeks before Martin’s death, the school system commended Chief Hurley for “decreasing school-related juvenile delinquency by an impressive 60 percent for the last six months of 2011.” What was actually happening was that crimes were not being reported as crimes, but instead treated as disciplinary infractions.

In October 2011, after a video surveillance camera caught Martin writing graffiti on a door, MDSPD Office Darryl Dunn searched Martin’s backpack, looking for the marker he had used. Officer Dunn found 12 pieces of women’s jewelry and a man’s watch, along with a flathead screwdriver the officer described as a “burglary tool.” The jewelry and watch, which Martin claimed he had gotten from a friend he refused to name, matched a description of items stolen during the October 2011 burglary of a house on 204th Terrace, about a half-mile from the school. However, because of Chief Hurley’s policy “to lower the arrest rates,” as one MDSPD sergeant said in an internal investigation, the stolen jewerly was instead listed as “found property” and was never reported to Miami-Dade Police who were investigating the burglary. Similarly, in February 2012 when an MDSPD officer caught Martin with a small plastic bag containing marijuana residue, as well as a marijuana pipe, this was not treated as a crime, and instead Martin was suspended from school.

Either of those incidents could have put Trayvon Martin into the custody of the juvenile justice system. However, because of Chief Hurley’s attempt to reduce the school crime statistics — according to sworn testimony, officers were “basically told to lie and falsify” reports — Martin was never arrested. And if he had been arrested, he might never have been in Sanford the night of his fatal encounter with Zimmerman.

Having said all that, if we want to be philosophical about this, we might observe that there is, indeed, a way to honor Trayvon Martin. It is for the white-dominated American media, the white-dominated entertainment industry, the white-dominated Democratic Party, and the rest of white-dominated progressive America to stop telling young black people like Trayvon Martin that they are not "really black" unless they are fighting, using drugs, talking and acting like thugs, and citing "racism" as their excuse for everything. It is for America's first half-white president to stop treating black Americans as an aggrieved underclass that can only be protected against injustice and poverty by voting Democrat. When the President famously said in the heat of a presidential election "If I had son, he'd look like Trayvon," he ironically spoke a truth greater than he knew. I assume Obama was talking about the photo of the young, smiling Trayvon that was shamelessly displayed on every major media outlet and on activists tee shirts, not the actually 17 year old troubled youth expelled twice from school with the raised middle finger. Both pictures of Trayvon were taken during Mr. Obama's Presidency. The lad went from smiley youth to self-described angry "gangsta" on your watch, Mr. President. Mr. First Black President, both versions of Trayvon were your sons and you failed them.


Regardless of your political persuasion, it is a sign of the greatness of this country that black Americans could go from Selma to the White House in part of one lifetime. All Americans should have be proud of that achievement particularly given that the black man ran on an inclusive platform of "Hope and Change," uplifting ideals if also very fuzzy. Martin Luther King would have been proud.


Much progress has been made since Selma, but not everything "progressive" is good. To say the black family is in crisis is a huge understatement when over 70% of black children are born to single mothers. The education inner city minorities receive is a scandal. Even those few who graduate get a substandard education that leaves them increasingly unqualified in a high tech world. Black teen unemployment is twice white rates. Welfare dependency is a multigenerational problem with young black males incarceration rates astronomically high. Half of all murders are committed by blacks and almost all blacks are killed by other blacks. The black inner city is an urban war zone with wasted lives and destroyed dreams


The black family is imploding and there has never had a greater need for a black voice of authority and reason. Barack Obama, elected as America's first Black President (or White Black President as the New York Times might say), was uniquely qualified to deliver that message.


So, what message did you bring to your constituency in crisis, Mr. President?


To live a good life you must live a moral life. Don't get pregnant out of wedlock, it dooms you and your child. Education is the way out of poverty. If you stay in school and work hard, I will do the hard work to ensure that your union controlled schools will be reformed, including vouchers out of educational cesspits. You will get a real education. Avoid the gangs and gangsta society. Getting into fights all the time, another Trayvon text, is not a good way to live. Bitches, whores, niggas and crackers are not acceptable in any society, particularly in black society that has had to endure so much. Don't listen to the race hustlers, they will make you a permanent victim and use you just like the old Jim Crow bosses.


Did Obama make these his guiding message to the black community? No. Instead he offered Obama phones, Jay Z is cool, cops act stupidly, the NBA thugs are hip, D.C.'s successful voucher program is unfair, schools failing No Child Left Behind standards are given a pass, stimulus spending should go to union jobs not your jobs, avoiding all personal responsibility is ok, and generally living the lifestyles of the rich and famous on taxpayer money is the way to go. That was his message to Trayvon.


And Trayvon listened - and got caught with stolen goods and burglar tools. Caught with drugs. But faced no criminal charges. Was into MMA fighting, doing it away from school. If it gets you kicked out your mom's house, no problem, you can go stay in Sanford at your Dad's girlfriend's place. The delicate task that presented itself to liberals in the Zimmerman case — once they belatedly realized that Zimmerman was in fact the son of a Hispanic mother — was to somehow “de-Hispanicize” the man they had already begun to fit for a high-tech white man’s noose.

Why? Why the patently ridiculous nonsense of trying to somehow gloss over Zimmerman’s heritage? To make him white when he was every bit the Hispanic man that President Obama — he too with a white parent — is the black man?

There is a reason.

Liberals think they have conservatives backed into a corner on immigration. No need to rehash the issue here — you know the basics and have by now heard the rhetoric endlessly. There are 11 million Hispanic illegals in the country. But what would happen if…out of the blue…the shoe was suddenly on the other foot?

What if those very same 11 million illegal Hispanic immigrants-turned-American-citizens suddenly saw liberals and Democrats as the rabid, foaming, anti-Hispanic racists? What if liberals were suddenly seen as so racist that they would sooner lynch an innocent Hispanic man rather than admit a black teenager may in fact have really jumped said Hispanic man and tried to kill him?
