Zimmerman verdict is in.

Yeah, but those are blacks killing blacks. In Chicago that's no big deal to the city government.

Actually, it is, especially when the victims are innocent bystanders and really especially when they are children. It's just not a big enough deal for them to do anything much about it.

I watched it and I cried and my stomach hurts. I didn't think I would be so upset, but it's so sad. He was a kid.

I think given the laws and the evidence, the jury voted the right way. What happened? Did the prosecution bungle it? Does Florida just have really shitty laws? How do we fix a society where we have people walking around scared and desperate and armed?

I have to say that following the case was hard, but it's much more nuanced than the original media narrative made it out to be; I don't know that I would have questioned it otherwise. Most big American media sources really are pretty crappy nowadays, but I guess they're scared and desperate, too.

Like I said, the city government don't give a shit.

Exception: If Rahm can use it to bolster his political power then he will act all kinds of concerned. He won't do anything about it, but he will act concerned.

I agree with this post. I think the prosecution over reached with the charges (probably due to public pressure). Personally I think Zimmerman should have done some jail time but even I wouldn't have voted guilty for the two charges the jury had to consider.

No one should be surprised by this.

Martin made a mistake and paid for it with his life.

The lesson here? Don't try and be a bad ass unless you are prepared for the what the other party/parties might bring on.

What happened is what I've been saying since last March: for way too many people, it was

1) Completely understandable for Zimmerman to assume that a 16-year-old black kid (aka the "fucking punk") walking through his neighborhood was up to no good

2) Completely understandable that Zimmerman, who was armed, feared for his life when confronted by the unarmed Martin.

3) NOT understandable that Martin's own aggressive confronting of Zimmerman could have itself been inspired by the desire to defend his own self. Because why would anyone ever be afraid of a white person?

I agree we're definitely going to see more people walking around armed, because the message here is that if you shoot an unarmed person and there are no witnesses, you can claim self-defense and have a jury buy that.

Racism explains most of the reaction to this case--the extreme interest in this case shown by the GB's foremost racists is proof of that--but firearms worship is certainly a factor also.

The only people that mattered were the ones on that jury. Based on the evidence, they couldn't prove the charges that were filed.

I meant what happened with the trial. I think the fact that Zimmerman is walking away is free is ludicrous, but I also agree with the verdict. I am surprised the prosecution pursued second degree murder given the evidence, and I think that zipman's assessment re: public pressure is probably correct, at least in part. Zimmerman's decision to pursue Trayvon was unjustified and directly led to his death - even if it's not legally murder, how could he not be culpable?

I agree that it's been nauseating to see how quickly people are ready to cling to the "that's just what thugs get" narrative, especially because we can guess at what word they're really thinking when they say "thugs."

However, I think that to paint Zimmerman as a frothing wannabe cop with a blind hatred for black people is simplified and fictionalized, as well, and I was even inclined to believe it at first. I mean, the man gunned down a kid carrying skittles. It's just an awful, incomprehensible thing.

Oh wait, you want to live in a country where anyone can just demand to see your papers? You republicans must really love communism.

True, but the unpunished killing of black people has sort of been an art form there for a long while. It's the difference between eating Mexican food in San Antonio and eating it in Milwaukee.

Wait. I thought the Hispanics where being oppressed. Now we have to decide how white Zimmerman is? This is getting silly.

It's not "papers" anymore, it's a plastic card with a magnetic strip on it.

Where have you been for the last 80 years?

They can already do that, if you are driving or boarding an airplane or doing many other normal actions.
