Quite frankly there is no evidence that Martin was thinking at all, none.
My take on the entire episode? Zimmerman was a frustrated neighborhood watch captain in an area plagued by property crimes and break-ins. His conversation with 911 dispatch readily indicates this to be the case. That in and of itself does not make him the lone vigilante out to shoot someone that the prosecution has painted him as.
Martin was playing out a drama in his mind for the benefit of the GF he was chatting with on the phone. Young men, and some not so young, have a tendency to do that in order to impress. We know from public transcripts of previous interactions with the girl in question that he painted himself as a 'badass.' How much of that is true we don't know, but that is the self portrait he was painting. However we do know from her responses that he kept getting into trouble and had a reputation for doing so, if only in her mind.
Neither party is blameless in this tragedy, but it really does come down to who initiated the physical confrontation and all the evidence points to Martin.
Ishmael
When a civilian puts a gun on his hip and walks out of his house to play policeman, he has accepted the responsibility of being in authority.
Zimmerman would have washed out of any police academy before lunch. He does not have the requisite testicular fortitude to put himself in the position he did.
