The devastating gun violence over the last 12 months has done nothing to dampen weapons sales at Smith & Wesson. In fact, the iconic company reports that sales have reached a record high of $588 million for the year ending April 30. Background checks, perhaps the most effective means of tracking sales, show that the week following the Sandy Hook massacre set a record for license applications, and permits in the city of Newtown doubled over the three months after the shootings. Another rise in gun sales occurred after 12 people were shot by alleged killer James Holmes at a "Dark Knight Rises" screening last July, and President Obama's re-election with the attendant fear of restrictions triggered another high in retail weapons movement.
