The Construction Thread

Had some of my guys misjudge the force of 30 tons of concrete as not shore up a mold as well as they should have yesterday.

All that concrete made its home all over the yard. Shoveled it into a mud truck for 3 hours last night. That was fun. In the way getting a root canal done on the wrong tooth was fun.

Not me!

And that's my final word on that.

Sort of. *sigh* I should have designed it but I trust my 35 year employees to know how to do this since we DO IT EVERY DAY.

The only thing you can trust from them is that if you give them a chance, they will fuck you.
Maybe not on purpose but dumb will always take over.

sorry wk but sounds like you shouldn't have left the thinking up to them :(

people always have good intentions, but knowledge is king.

It was an accident, an annoying one but an accident nonetheless.

I've been working 80 hour weeks, some of these guys work more than that and are way more physical. We are at the end of the season and everyone is tired. It was a good wake up call in paying attention. I'm pretty sure we all learned a lesson yesterday.

at least it was a safe accident, no one was hurt and it didn't cost a ton of money to fix.

you weren't the one shoveling that mix last night, i hope :(

It happened at 6pm, there are only about 8 of us left at that time. All hands on deck.

good philosophy to have, if you can't trust your employees you end up doing everything yourself....

80 hour weeks all season sounds like you should be hiring more people.
No wonder so many are out of work

Only so much room to work here and only so many people can do the job.

Also we fall victim to the oil boon, the talent has been sucked up by the Dakotas.

I'm drafting my quarterly construction management newsletter and need two more topics. It goes to contractors, any ideas?

how about proper building envelope construction? most gc's use tyvek but totally fail at properly sealing the penetrations, never use end dams, seldom cover the seams & overlaps properly.

It's administrative, not practical... like how to soak the owner for more money, or how to blame everything on the design team.

When I was in Canada in August, one of the big questions was "where are we going to find the labor to build these projects?". I'm referring to some large mines in the east.

Just because there's a pile of folk in line at the unemployment office, it doesn't mean they are skilled construction workers. The skilled guys (and gals) who want to work are working.

A lot of Alaskans are down in ND working the Bakken field. The weather is nicer than up on the slope.

Every time we have a recession like this one it costs us years later.
I remember a bad on in the early 80's.
No new workers got trained during that time due to a shortage of work.

I see very few construction workers in the 45 to 55 age bracket.
We pretty much lost a generation then and we will see it again in a few years

I have talked several times on this site how I like to hire men past 40. They usually turn out to be a better workforce for me. Very low turnout in that age range when I hired back in May.
