From the Associated Press:

LOS ANGELES - The producers of "The Social Network" are producing the film adaption of the best-selling erotic trilogy "Fifty Shades of Grey."

Universal Pictures and Focus Features said in a joint statement Monday that Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti will reteam for the adaptation of the best-selling novels by E. L. James.

The multimillion-selling books tell the story of an unworldly college student engaging in an unusual romantic relationship with a wealthy young businessman.

They have been called "mommy porn" for their sexual content and large female following.

I love the description of "unusual romantic relationship." :)

lol, I'm glad that the book has been so successful. I'm shocked when authors (mostly on twitter) bash the story for a) being self published b) told in first person

I hope the movie is a success

First thought: I can't wait for the brouhaha over the rating or inclusion/exclusion of content.

Second thought: Though I don't begrudge the author her success, at all, I still can't help but snicker when I read the one-line summary of the books.

Third thought: Lovecraft will be first in line to see the flick, right after he finishes (re?)-reading all of Anne Rice's re-released Beauty books (now with sleek, glossy covers that reference Fifty Shades!). :p

Jen, it's bashed for other things. For one thing, it was originally Twilight fan fiction; as I understand it, all the author did was change the names for publication (although I also heard other changes were made). It gained a lot of popularity online, but it's been published by Random House, which is not self-published. I don't think the first person POV has anything to do with it. I mean, people may not like it, but first person POV is no reason to bash a book. No serious review or article that I've read has mentioned it.

You can search on the forums and find others' thoughts about it. Selena Kitt and a few others have read it, and they have commented on the poor writing, plot structure, etc. Some can't get past the idea, for example, of an inexperienced 22yo virgin jumping into a (pseudo?) BDSM relationship with this guy. I've heard that when you get right down to it, the sex is pretty tame.

I have no interest in reading it although I may someday.

LOL Poor LC -- he doesn't like either of those and this may send him over the edge. ;)

I know. :)

But my internet is being insanely slow and estimating another 45 minutes to download some software I need for work, and there's no Tour to watch on TV, so I was hoping for a show.

I'm so glad to see this!

I mean its been all of a week since I've seen a new thread discussing 50 shades!

All kidding aside, all I can see for this movie is a newer maybe slightly(I'll strees slightly) sexed up version of 9 1/2 weeks.

That's really what this seems to me.

I also feel that it6 is going to be so rushed, that it's not going to have a chance to do anything but suck.

*snork* but if Aaron Sorkin does the screen play, at least they'll have snappy dialogues filled with euphemisms. ;)

The plot is exactly the opposite of 9 1/2 weeks. Instead of an unknown man debasing an unsure woman into a nervous breakdown (which can we be any more trite, with the damsel who can't handle the heat in the kitchen and all?), we have her enthusiastically consenting to some mildly kinky sex and also them falling in lurve.

But a film with explicit erotic elements that drive a romance story? I can't imagine it being made successfully in this society.

The story does not have to be successful

This movie will be so hyped that it will make triple its money back on the opening weekend when all the lemmings who just "had to buy the book" now "have to see the movie."

After the debut weekend when the critics kill it and the first wave of viewrs say its not so good it will slow up, but that initial punch will be more than enough to make it a "success" where it counts, the pocketbook.

They have no interest in a good film, they want it out fast, damn fast.

What I'd like to know, is if they do make this movie, presumably aiming it to the "mommy" audience who read it, then who's going to watch the kids so mom can go see it?

The dad's who have no interest in it.

Now want a plot bunny?

A guy goes to see 50 shades knowing he is going to be the only man in a theater of horny undersexed "mommies' who will be melting in their seats over some poser in a suit.

That guy is going to score big time! They'll be easier targets than a single bridesmaid at her best friends wedding.

Shit, if I was single, I would endure the movie just to sit there sniffing around like a wolf amongst sheep.

Somehow, as a woman, even though I have no interest in 50 Shades, I find this insulting.

Well then you should find the people pushing shades at the "mommies" insulting because this is how they're lumping women into their demographic.

They are portraying "mommies" as desperate and sexually frustrated. Christian Gray is their hero, a real man, one worth fantasizing about while hubby slogs it off to work every day. He's the new "Fabio"

Every article that mentions "mommies" should insult you.

Seriously it should, because its that crap that gave birth to my little scenario.

I don't feel that way at all. I think the women should be pissed their being portrayed this pathetically.

I was given a copy, but its low on my to read list. Except for today, I've been slammed writing my book called 'The Game'

Now, what I find interesting about '50' is that its a love hate thing. I've heard from people that love it (and I'm shocked) and others that hate it (poor writing is most common theme).

On twitter, had several conversations about this book. Many were not happy that the book was written in 1st person.

Two weeks ago, I was at our local Barnes and Nobel and two women were talking about '50 shades' and they wanted something that was better so I sold them on Tiffany Reisz ebook (her latest isn't in paperback yet only on the nook)! Tiffany rocks and is a good writer, but her books are harder.

My wife fell under the hated it, in fact she didn't finish it.

her reasoning was it was to tame, and Gray came across as too much of an ass. My wife is a fan of the "troubled bad boy" motif and she said Gray was poorly portrayed, he was not mysterious or "cool" he was annoying.

The reason I'm mentioning this is that unlike much of the target audience my wife reads a lot of hardcore erotica. in fact she probably reads 20-30 stories a week off this site, so she wants the "real deal" as she puts it.

The other reason I mention it, is because the first person didn;t bother her at all, because she reads so many hardcore stories and many of them are first person.

First person is bigger in porn than other genres so many reading shades don;t have a good "feel" for that style.

That's because it is insulting. it's a member of the majority using an insulting term to prove that he's hip and with it among the minority, wile totally missing the nuances that would actually key him in.

He has advice to share about what women "should" do, which quite coincidentally, is pretty much what a whole lot of women ARE doing, wow! And they didn't need him to tell them, even.

But he means well. He just has feet on his breath a lot.

Whatever. This is not about the "majority" keep your prejudices out of the topic.

This is about marketing which the sole purpose of is to lock into a certain demographic and bang the shit out of them until there is nothing left. Shades originally wasn't hyped to "mommies" it wasn't hyped at all, until it began doing very well.

Then they did some research and found it was the so-called "mommies" buying this. They are now portraying them as borderline idiots.

Let me try an analogy(yeah, you;re thinking this will be good"

The way I feel about the way the "mommies" are being portrayed with shades is the way men are portrayed in beer commercials.

If you;re a fan of any sport(so PL will know what I'm speaking of) all you see is beer commercials (and viagra of course)

In those commercials men are shown as being the dumber than a box of rocks.

They are being shown as a bunch of cretins who live to hang with their "buds/bros and drink recycled carbonated piss and yell "boobies!"

Or the more sophisticated beers show the yuppies drinking Sam Adams by a campfire surrounded by gyrating hotties, who wouldn'r be caught dead with their dumb asses.

Either one is insulting. The problem is men are...... okay they don;t know they're being insulted. Not many of them anyway they aren't wired that way.

I have always considered women a little more "image conscious" with how they're portrayed and in general a lot brighter.

They are now being shown to be as weak willed and stupid as a guy in a coors commercial. "Oh, 50 shades, I gotta read it , oh, Christian Gray! Yay!"

All I'm trying to say is if I were a woman I would not be excited about this phenomenon as I would be insulted (at least since it really took off)

First off, being a mom, I don't think every article mentioning "mommies" should or will insult me. The "Mommy porn" thing is annoying, but it's just a label, a short-hand way of referring to it. Plus, let's face it, a whole lot of people probably don't think mommies have much sex once the kid issue is done. They'd be wrong, of course, but many probably think that.

Actually, what gave birth to your scenario is your perception of the women who read and like 50 Shades, and that is insulting as well. I'm sure there are plenty of women out there who liked it for their own reasons and not because they were "supposed to." They're entitled to like it if they want.

And it may have been Stella, I can't remember, but I read an article/post somewhere that noted when you strip away all the external stuff what you have is a story where a man pays a whole damn lot of attention to a woman. True, not every woman wants that kind of attention (I don't) but that doesn't make the basic idea any less appealing.

Finally, this was a net phenomenon (that I missed, as per usual) that was popular with "mommies," or I guess women of potential mommy age, before it was in print. Nobody is forcing it on anyone, so stop acting like they are.

And please, like men don't fantasize about sex-kittens while the WIFE slogs off to work.

But you're not a woman, and please don't generalize about how they "should" feel.

And getting mad about the marketing? God, if people did that, they'd have no energy left for anything else.

Well, my point is this. 50 Shades of Gray, exposed people to new things. After buying that book, the majority of people will buy another BDSM book! I think the market grew and I give her credit for that!

Well you should feel this ...... okay I got nothing here. Spent too much time on GB and was rewarded with a migraine. Now, waiting for the drugs to kick in.

I love it when men tell us how we should/ought to feel. Who the fuck uses should and ought? And when someone starts off with those words....its never a good thing:devil:
