I have never had bourbon, but I imagine there are similarities. I understand that most bourbons are matured for about four years in the barrel. Whereas the Oban distillery that I visited stores the whisky for a minimum of 14 years in the barrels. The proofage is very similar. Oban is diluted to 43%. I tasted some of the original 60+% out of the barrel. That is really hot stuff.

btw Scotch Whisky is spelt without the "e" and Irish Whisky is spelt with an "e" for some perverse reason.
