I wasn't planning on getting this up so soon, but I've managed to get a lot of work done ahead of schedule and find myself with more free time than I anticipated. I still have more to do, and the thread won't be going live until sometime next week, but I saw no reason not to open up the casting. Let's begin shall we?

Welcome to Autumn Valley. This quiet little New England town has a friendly if eccentric population. In some districts, the old colonial architecture still stands. In one neighborhood you'll see modern apartments with brick and stone facades, and in another Victorian mansions with immaculate lawns and gardens. The town straddles the gently running waters of the Irving River as it trickles down from the mountains. Lush forests of mixed deciduous and coniferous trees surround the town on all sides. Things are peaceful, idyllic and serene.

But the town is not the sleepy little get-away that it seems. There are old traditions among the population. Old magic. There is little here that would hurt you, not unless you provoked it first, but you wouldn't always know that to see it. For you see, the residents of Autumn Valley are very unusual and only show their true colors after the sun goes down. Such as the family of werewolves who run a small orchard and farm on the edge of town. The sorceress who runs the town's most popular pub, The Black Cat, which is also a secretive brothel that employs only those skilled in the ways of magic. The local medium who lives by the cemetery and tends the grounds while also ensuring that the spirits rest in peace.

None of these folk are dangerous. Or perhaps more accurately, they're not malicious. Nor do they dislike visitors. But Autumn Valley is not a home for everyone. Most visitors leave after the first night, afraid of what they heard outside their window under the pale moonlight. But those who don't belong in the modern world, those who believe that magic is real, can find a lovely home here. And a very welcoming community.

Our story begins on October 1st. For two centuries, the town has celebrated harvest season for the whole month of October, concluding with a grand festival and public banquet on All Hallow's Eve. The harvest festival is just beginning and the townsfolk are taking to the streets in celebration. Magic is in the air, the spirits are gathering, and the people lend their supernatural talents to create a memorable if sometimes frightening month of revelry.

This is a group thread set in a little town of old magic and the supernatural. The tone is reminiscent of Washington Irving and Ray Bradbury. Everyone in town is strange or magical in some manner and this is a haven in the modern world where they can be who they truly are in public. Autumn Valley is isolated and quiet, so much so that it doesn't show up on some maps anymore.

To submit a character, use the following template:

Name:
Age:

Appearance: (use either a physical description or a picture if you have one)

Personality: (at least one paragraph)

Background: (a little bit about your character's life in Autumn Valley if they were born and raised here, or how they came to live in the town later in life)

To help flesh out the town a bit, here area few important locations. Feel free to build around this.

The Black Cat - The town's most popular pub. Three floors, colonial decor. Also serves as a brothel that employs only prostitutes skilled in magic. The owner, Sophia Jansen, sometimes tends bar and also serves as the madam. A seasonal favorite is the pumpkin pasta bake.

Draven Farms - A farm for apples, pumpkins and berries. Run by the Draven family, who are all werewolves. During harvest season, they set up a small carnival of sorts on their property and invite the town. The family currently consists of Michael Draven and his wife Cora and their three sons Luke (23), Nolan (20) and Carson (17). Luke the eldest is also an up and coming playwright in the town.

The Benton Cinema - This historic movie theater is haunted by the ghosts of local actors from generations past. It is currently owned by Anita Duschamps who inherited it from her mother.

Mason Square - Allegedly constructed by the Freemasons who helped found the town in 1761, this large town square stretches out in front of city hall and is also the main location for many of the town's celebrations, including the harvest season carnival every October. A farmer's market is held here every Sunday.

Raven Hill Cemetery - The town's cemetery is a sprawling plot on the hills on the west end of the town. On clear nights, one can watch the sunset from almost any point in town and see the graveyard backlit in the fading light. The grounds (and the spirits themselves) are tended to by a middle-aged medium named Robert Vervloet.

Doodleberry Farms - The closest thing Autumn Valley has to an ethnic district, this farm and the small market on the land are run by a colony of faeries.

Cherry Street - Along the riverfront is a long road called Cherry Street. The lovely view of the river and the historic colonial architecture along the Irving River made it prime real estate. It is now a long row of restaurants and bars.

If any of the characters described above sound like a role you'd like to play, take a crack at it. It's first come, first served however.

Here's my character:

Name: Luke Draven
Age: 23

Appearance: Luke is 6' tall with a runner's build. He's sinewy, toned and tanned from a lifetime of working on a farm. He has long brown hair streaked with natural rusty highlights. His eyes are mismatched. The left eye is an icy blue while the right is a shining yellow. His high cheekbones and bushy eyebrows give him a somewhat wild aspect. His stare can be quite intense but is contrasted by his affable demeanor.

Personality: Luke has the strong work ethic one would expect of a farm boy and considers himself an Old World gentleman. He's friendly, agreeable, outgoing and polite almost to a fault. He also tends to have his head in the clouds, going on autopilot through his chores as he dreams up new stories to write. Ironically, he has an intense focus on things that interest him. When he gets into the zone when writing, he often forgets to eat. Previous girlfriends have commented this focus extends to the bedroom as well. He loves to party and celebrate and during the annual harvest festival he's particularly popular with the children, whom he entertains with music and storytelling.

Background: The Draven family have been in Autumn Valley since the town was founded and as far as they know have been werewolves even before then. The farm has been there since the start. Some of the trees in the orchard are over 200 years old and grow antique eating apples now found only in Autumn Valley. The Dravens typically only ever had a single child, always a son, but the current generation is an exception. Luke is the eldest of three with two brothers, Nolan and Carson.

Of the brothers, Nolan is expected to take over the farm when his parents pass away. Luke is more artistic than his brothers and wants to become a writer full-time, especially a playwright. He's worked with the Sons of Liberty theater company in the past and recently was able to show a murder mystery he wrote to one of the senior producers in the company, George Bronson. George liked the play and decided to produce and direct it for the harvest festival this year.

Name: Sophia Jansen

Age: She's a Timeless Beauty somewhere between late 20s and early 40s. Perhaps it's all those magical creams she uses, or maybe it's a magic glamour, or maybe she has access to the waters of the Fountain of Youth.

Appearance: Tall for a woman, 5'10 or 11. A dancers build, lovely long legs, but curves in all the right places. (A body like Catherine Zeta-Jones, I think.) Dark auburn hair, it looks more reddish in the summer and goes darker brown in winter. She tans easily and always has a healthy glow. Her eyes are hazel, sometimes they look more amber, sometimes more green. She has an unidentifiable foreign accent, perhaps Eastern European, Middle Eastern, no one is exactly sure and she isn't saying.

She always looks elegant even in jeans and a tee shirt, although she favors fashionable clothing, usually dresses or skirts and tops that enhance her figure.

Personality:
She seems to be able to turn on and off the charm and can be very cold and calculating if she thinks she is being crossed. She is a formidable woman. She likes to be in control and is very independent. She is not open with her thoughts or feelings. But as any good bartender or madam, she gets others to talk.

Background: She has been here for a long time, the residents can probably make a guess at her real age if they do the math. There are rumours about her, that her husband (a wealthy man, possibly some European Baron or Middle Eastern Prince) beat her and she killed him. Some say she is a retired Russian double agent. Others rumours say she danced naked in the Follies Bergere or in Vegas. She has occasionally performed the Dance of the Seven Veils for special customers, or for some more private celebrations. She is very well traveled and has stories from all over the world. She speaks many languages fluently, including magical ones.

She treats her staff well and her girls are well paid and well taken care of. She does still see some customers, but it's rare. Generally if she takes a fancy to someone, they don't have to pay for her, although expensive gifts are always welcome. Expensive gifts and actually wooing might be required if a man wants to get her attention. She's rather flexible with her sexuality and has had a few women as lovers.

((If I think of more for her, I'll add it. If she needs to be tweaked to fit with the town, just let me know. I also have a few more characters I can bring in, some to help populate Doodleberry Farms.))

Happy to have you, of course. The way you describe Sophia, a single sentence enters my mind. "Yes, ma'am, order me around!" ;) :rose:

Name: Teagan "Tigger" "Tig" McCormack
Age: 19

Appearance: One the short side, 5'2" but I wouldn't say she's petite, she's medium boned and curvy. Thick curly red hair, big brown eyes. A dusting of freckles. She would fit right in if she went to Ireland. She's stronger than she looks from helping on Doodleberry Farm. Her ass is probably her best feature. But her hair is what people notice first. She looks very human, but is 1/8th fey.

She usually wears jeans and plaid flannel shirts, stuff you would wear around a farm.

Personality: Teagan is very bubbly. Quick with a smile. She always sees the glass half full. Her nickname as a child was Tigger because she was always bouncing around. She still has a few stuffed Tiggers in her room. She gets embarrassed when people call her Tigger now, (or rolls her eyes when her family does) but she's fine if people call her Tig.

Teagan is passionate about music. She plays violin with a Celtic flair and dreams of being a rock star, bring Celtic fusion to the masses.

Background: Teagan's family are hereditary witches. Legend has it their many-greats grandmother actually brought the fey to this country. They have a pact with the faeries here and grow the best vegetables anyone has ever tasted. Probably because the Fair Folk play such an important part of farm life. They also keep bees and brew mead, enough to supply the pub and keep some for their own use.

The farm house has been enlarged over the years and they offer various classes in herbalism, tarot reading, reiki, and other assorted new age things. It's also a B&B although they don't get too many guests from the outside world. Many locals drop in for breakfast.

The grounds around the house are open enough for celebrating various pagan rites. The Full Moon, the New Moon, the 8 sabbats...any excuse to drink and dance naked under the moon.

****

Tig has a cousin Mo who lives at the farm along with Mo's mother (Tig's aunt), Tig's mother, grand mother and great grandmother. They will probably be more like NPC's unless someone takes a fancy to learning more about them. I'll write about them later.

And as always, if any of this doesn't fit with your vision of the town, let me know and I'll edit.

Looks quite interesting. I'll have to think about it, but there's a good chance of bring in.

All fits right in, I think. Though maybe tone down some of the New Age stuff in favor of old world folk remedies.

That said, though I wouldn't mind have this many lovely ladies all to myself, we should bring a couple guys in for balance so that poor Luke isn't run ragged as the most eligible bachelor in town. If you know anyone who would be interested in this, send them an invite.

To help everyone get some inspiration going, I thought I'd put up some resources and attach a few pictures. Naturally I recommend everyone read some of Ray Bradbury's fantasy stories such as Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Lake, and his short story anthologies. Washington Irving is also a good choice for that feel of post-Revolution Americana.

There are some samples of the Weird US book series in here that should get you going. In particular, look at the Northeastern states as Autumn Valley is situated in a non-specific part of New England. I picked the region because of the architecture and aesthetics but deliberately avoided naming a specific state to make the town seem a little more mysterious.

Lots of folk stories, legends and tall tales here to get your inspiration going.

And I have one attached pic for visual inspiration. I found some more over at the Lounge, but I'll need to dig them back up, so give me a little time on that.

Name: Fiona “Fi” Alden

Age: 24

Appearance: Standing at 5‘9“, Fiona’s form was taut and toned, her athletic build did little to detract from her sinful feminine curves. Her bust was modest at best though still a tempting sight to behold. Cornflower blue eyes danced with a light of their own behind short fiery locks, her bangs the longest, reaching down almost to her chin. She wore an almost constant, knowing smile upon that angular, beautiful visage, as if she knew some giant secret that the rest of the populace didn’t. A light hint of freckles dotted the bridge of her nose adding to her already enrapturing look.
A visual of her features, minus the clothing and cranial accessories.

Personality: Fiona typically was calm and collected though if something or someone managed to set her off her temper could be quiet fierce; she could never take critizism or even praise for that matter gracefully. She could be rather blunt and to the point though for the most part not overtly critical. While she was rather laid back at her job she did take it very seriously when she was called.

Background: The Alden family was a recent addition to Autumn Valley; only perhaps a few generations had been born and raised there. She hailed from a rather potent line of sorcerers who dabbled in the searing arts of pyromancy, though Fiona herself rarely admits to such. The strength of her family’s devotion to the flame coursed through her veins regardless of her acceptance; one of the non-so-subtle hints was that flaming crimson mane, which she usually kept covered in some form or fashion. By the time Fiona had brought into the world the Alden family line had pathetically dwindled. Her mother had died giving birth to Fiona and some whispered darkly that a great fire immolated the woman shortly after Fiona was birthed. Her farther never truly got over her mother’s death and was a constant reminder of her. The early years of her life were as uneventful as one could be in Autumn Valley, though her father was always distant and relatively uninterested in his daughter’s life. She grew up without any siblings, her only family contact coming from an uncle’s family on her mother’s side. In her fifteenth year more tragedy struck when her father caught ill and his healthy quickly deteriorated. It was hard on the young girl to stand idly by and watch her father waste away, though his last words were what changed her life entirely. Weakly the man beckoned the girl closer to his deathbed as he whispered dryly in her ear “You should have been the one that died.”

Fi stormed out of the room with tears in her eyes; never did she look back nor did she ever tell anyone what her father’s last words were. She never returned to that house after that, nor did she attend his funeral. To this day Fiona doesn’t even really know which headstone is her fathers and for the most part does not go to the Raven Hill Cemetery unless she has to. After her father’s death she went to go live with her uncle for a few years till she was old enough to take up a part-time position at the sheriff’s station. Once she was old enough she applied to the local police academy in the closest city near Autumn Valley. She excelled at everything she did, though her temper surely was one of her downfalls. The training she received hardened her resolve to an extent. It was a few years before she returned to Autumn Valley once again and applied for the open Deputy position. Though she had experienced many hardships there Fiona couldn’t deny that it was home. Over the years she proved to be a dutiful officer of the law and earned a begrudging respect from most citizens. While on duty she could quiet the hard ass and the whispers caught like wildfire of her temper. One of the stranger rumors about town was that anyone she took to bed was burnt to a crisp in her arms. Fiona managed to keep the streets relatively clean in her few short years as Deputy, since the most dangerous things she encountered was teenagers sneaking out in the middle of the night to drink and tip cows, or the occasional fairy with a balloon filled with maple syrup. But with the Harvest festival starting up it was Fiona’s time to shine.

While the old powers of her family line continued to course through her frame, Fiona herself was all but ignorant to their true strength. Her father had never taught her to properly wield such gifts. Over the years she had managed to acquire some control over small aspects of such, the ability to control flames to an extent, the larger the blaze the harder it was to control. She found she near immune to the ravages of the flame, though such did not extend to her clothing or even her hair. She even managed to light small things on fire, the little trick she uses to light her cigarettes from time to time. Though she had sworn to have quit smoking altogether, she is more often than not found with one between her lips. If not that she sates her oral fixation with chewing gum or the occasional sucker.

The back story all checks out. I like the idea of the rumors surrounding her mother's death. Perhaps this is something of a local legend?

I like it. Which fits with her not really wanting to use what powers/magical abilities she has. Could go so far as to say they still talk about the rumor and added to it. Like she will immolate anyone she screws. :p

So she's already kind of a hardass at her job, and the rumors only make her scarier. Nice.

Also works nicely to create a dynamic that the town has a love-hate relationship with law enforcement. On the one hand, you kind of need them. On the other hand, they generally try to keep things peaceful in Autumn Valley because the last thing the townsfolk want is to call too much attention to the place.

Obviously laws on "controlled substances" and prostitution aren't really enforced. So most of her job probably involves wandering around town looking for something to do and having lunch. Or as I call it, Saturday.

Sounds purrfect to me. She'll be ramped for the festival to have a chance to do something besides walking up and down main street checking how far cars are from the curb.

How abt any pic of Marcus Schenkenberg? :) He's my reference for my Finn McCool char in my novel. Finn's supposed to be a half-elf warrior-bard.

Although, I must confess, personally, I like a guy with body hair.

Oh I like. I have to admit I like a man with some hair too.

Put some chest hair on him, give him the mismatched eyes and we'll say that's Luke.

Ooh yummy, I can see all of the girls will be fighting over him. If you look up images of Marcus Schenenberg, you will find some of him in the shower  and in a white Speedo.

I hope he likes to be scratched behind the ears.

Who doesn't? :D

I grew up in a Slavic family so I honestly don't think that men look right without body hair. And if I'm going to be playing a werewolf, he needs some hair on his chest. I can't imagine a werewolf getting body waxing for the same reason I wouldn't give my dog a mohawk.

Ooh yummy, I can see all of the girls will be fighting over him. If you look up images of Marcus Schenenberg, you will find some of him in the shower  and in a white Speedo.

Add to that he's a hard-working, soft spoken farm boy with Old World charm and a penchant for writing (including poetry) and he's pretty much genetically designed for the sole purpose of inducing swooning.

Maybe it's time to post something else on the board to get some more men to join us. :)
