Dear Kansas Governor Samuel Dale "Sam" Brownback:

“In general,” she wrote, “students on school-sponsored field trips, in which they are representing the school, would be expected to conduct themselves in accordance with school district policies, including use of electronic devices. Students may express their personal beliefs, views, and opinions, as long as they do so appropriately and in accordance with school policies.”

the proper punishment, then, is to revoke her phone privileges, or give her a day of in-class suspension for violating the rule. the wrong punishment is to make her kowtow to the governor.

she is being punished for what she said, and not for simply saying something on her "electronic device" during school hours. that's censorship.

The Cell phone usage during the school day is starting to be a problem with many students. Parents are calling students during class; students are calling home and/or texting other students during class.

When the green SMSD “Attendance Requirements, Discipline Procedures, Acceptable Use Guidelines and Notice of Non-Discrimination” booklets went home at the beginning of the school year, students and parents both signed the sheet at the back of the booklet agreeing to comply with the rules as stated in the booklet:

Policy JICJ: Possession and Use of Electronic Communication Devices states: Students may possess a cell phone or any other electronic device while on school property or while attending a school-sponsored activity, but are prohibited from using electronic devices during the school day as defined by the building administrations. Violations of this policy will be handled by appropriate school personnel and may include losing the privilege of bringing a cell phone or other electronic device to school. The school district will not be responsible for lost damaged or stolen electronic devices.

I propose that everyone with a twitter account posts the message "Sam Brownback is a fascist cunt" and asks it be retweeted.

A Kansas teen who refused to apologize to Gov. Sam Brownback for an insulting tweet got an apology today from the governor himself for his staff’s “over-reaction.”

An unpleasant tweet by Emma Sullivan, 18, was flagged by Brownback’s staff last week. The teen was told by her principal at Shawnee Mission East High School to apologize, but she refused, and the national brouhaha has led to her Twitter following soar from 60 to more than 6,000.

“My staff over-reacted to this tweet, and for that I apologize. Freedom of speech is among our most treasured freedoms,” Brownback said in a statement.

Confronted with a stubborn teenager who insisted on her right to free speech, the school district earlier today dropped its request that Sullivan write an apology and said it will leave that decision up to her. The district also fought back against accusations that it was stifling her freedom of speech.

“The district acknowledges a student’s right to freedom of speech and expression is constitutionally protected. The district has not censored Miss Sullivan nor infringed upon her freedom of speech,” said a statement. “She is not required to write a letter of apology to the Governor. Whether and to whom any apologies are issued will be left to the individuals involved.”

so the appropriate response for a governor is to track down a teenage girl and browbeat her?

and I'm still failing to see how this was officially sanctioned by the school.. or do you think its regular practice for principlas to force their students to write apologies to other students they don't like if they are caught not liking them?

if she violated a school rule, that's one thing and should be dealt with by the school and it should be about the school.. not about a person she didnt like

but Sam Brownshirt went out of his way to be a fascist

If the idiot had a brain in his head, he would have invited her to the gov's mansion for brunch and a chat.

Last week, Kansas teenager Emma Sullivan posted a snarky tweet about the state's governor Sam Brownback, which, naturally, led to Brownback's staffers pressuring her principal to make her apologize on threat of punishment. Apparently, at some point during the holiday weekend, the school district noticed this would violate Sullivan's free speech rights.

They've announced that she will not be forced to apologize and will not be punished for her tweet. Sullivan now has more Twitter followers than Governor Sam Brownback.

So sorry Sam.. NOT!

I think the real issue here is that the governor's staff is monitoring Twitter for mentions of Brownback's name. Leaving aside the obvious implications for free speech, that seems like a ridiculous use of taxpayers' money for an alleged fiscal conservative.

AJ's stance doesn't surprise me, as he's made it clear many times that people who disagree with him do not have free speech rights. If he's a "libertarian," the word has no meaning.

Show me where I said the girl had no right to tweet what she did.

There are no implications to free speech other than the ones already implicit in free speech.

Except for the part where she wasn't representing the school.. this was done on her own, not in any official capacity

lets reverse this.. lets say there was somebody who posted something negative about Obama

do you think it would be right if Obama then tracked that person down and made them apologize for saying something mean

AJ's fascism cheerleading is hypocritical to say the least

No, she was part of an official delegation. A school function.

It was like Obama's open mic moment blasting Netanyahu; yeah, it was free speech, but it did damage to the nation diplomatically.

Again, the governor made no one apologize.

Who did?

She's not being "punished."

She was asked by her sponsors to write a letter of apology for embarrassing them.

On the radio, I heard that she herself learned a valuable lesson about discretion now that the ensuing hissy-fit has made her a known commodity, what employer will trust her? She lets her politics cloud her judgement.

She figured that one out on her own.

The internet is searchable by anyone, not just Brownback's staff and we need to teach these young people that free speech is a right, but it is a right with possible consequence. How does the saying go, better to let people think you are stupid rather than to open your mouth and prove it?

If the idiot had a brain in his head, he would have invited her to the gov's mansion for brunch and a chat.

It, again, was the principle who could have written to the Governor and given him a lesson on free speech, he did not for he was embarrassed...

This is a great example of why Obama wins reelection.

Conservatives like Eyer, et. al., are quick to eat their own at the slightest hint of a serious allegation, Palin is stupid, Cain is a sexual predator, Gingrich gave his dying wife divorce papers in the hospital, Colin Powell (Buckley Jr., Borrks, Noonan) rails at the Tea Party and votes for Obama, meanwhile Democrats hail as their hero a sexual predator, they ignore tax cheats, you can be impeached, censored arrested with hookers and crack and it's not a big deal. You can date an escort, have him run a service out of your basement, not know pot is growing in your back yard, not being able to see the collapse of Freddie and Fannie while your boyfriend is working the derivative division and still retire as the smartest gawd-damned homosexual to have ever graced the American Congress, a proud testament to diversity and tolerance...

And when Obama wins, thanks to serious charges all over the land, he's going to have coat-tails and now thanks to the Internet and a seriously distorted unfactual story and serious charge, another perfectly good person is barred from advancing further because he's not "perfect."

Because there are going to be lots of serious charges to take one's mind off the record.

Like good ol' Sam's actual record.

Conservatives like Eyer...

That's funny...

...isn't there something you can take for that azzache?

Why is it that you seem to need to think you are on the governor's side on this issue...

...when he eventually did - for the exact reason I cited - the exact thing I advised?

What? His apology isn't actually sincere? He's just doing it to quell the mess?

If that were the true case...

...he would be more of what I've clearly seen of you emerge in this thread:

A partisan, political hack who proclaims anybody but Obama as his final answer...

Just think

the LITTLE CUNT coulda said

"Gov., I disagree with your positions etc"

NO!

The LITTLE CUNT

Shit on the Gov, in a way, had SHE been shit on, she woulda gone screaming to Mommy

Now the LITTLE CUNT is a celebrity

A CRIMINAL IN THE MAKING!

Wow, I've really hit a nerve here.

The Young Woman and the Educator are the ones with the conflict, but you have to have it be on the politician because that was your first, "quick take" on the hasty reading of the argument, one of your four or five new threads per day, and rather than admit that you might have made a mistake, you go to war on me.

Interesting. Very interesting.

This is way Obama will win. I am now more convinced of that than ever before.

All politicians and businesspeople now have to engage in actively searching the internet for damaging and misleading information, there's even a new industry sprung up around it, Reputation Insurance.

This Young Woman is going to need it. Even she learned the lesson you seem to ignore. Free speech, as I said, is absolute. If you expect people not to react to your free speech and censure objectionable free speech then you do not understand exactly what free speech is. THE SCHOOL acted against the young woman, not Senator, I mean Governor with the sterling solid record in politics.

Stop acting like you live in 1950...

Young CUNT done did good!

I would never hire Emma. But, I’m sure she has a great career ahead of her as an occu-pooper.

I’ll give her this… her level of “analysis” puts her on the same plane as the WaPo, NY Times and MSNBC editorial staffs.

That's such a steaming pile of bullshit... was she officially representing the school when she tweeted to her firends.. did the tweet start " on behalf of the school I declare"

no?

it's probably because she tweeting her friends genius

and it was NOTHING like Obama and Netanyahu... want to know why?

because Netanyahu didnt contact Obama's superiors to make him apologize or face the consequences

and again governor Brownshirt made no one apologize because the media backlash made him look like facist he is and he quickly backed the fuck off

It's on the politician in the first place because the polititcian was the one who started the shit storm.. in fact, the principal didnt even know untill Brownshirt got involved

yes.. this way Obama will win... because the more his adversaries show they are pro-censorship the more support he will win

do you think this girl or anyone in her family, or her friends, or anyone she knows will vote for this guy after this?

and yes, free speech is absolute.. and when you decided to stomp all over it, you're going to get backlash

and right,, the school acted.. with prompting by Brownshirt.. something you keep omitting

stop acting like you live in 1939 Germany

John Adams called...

...he said you're his free speech-kinda guy.

Your problem here is that you don't understand what free speech is.

You said that there were consequences for what she said. The 1st Amendment allows you to say anything you want about the government with NO CONSEQUENCES from the government.

That's not exactly what it says:

Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech...

Is all it says, once you take out the other rights it protects.
