I do have a problem with this media circus. The first of which is the fact that there have been NO criminal charges against those people that were actually engaged in this 'hacking.' In the pursuit of criminal organizations it is the general case that you catch a little fish, turn him/her, catch a bigger fish, etc. All with the force of the law and the proof of criminal wrong doing to back your play.

In this case there is no such proof of criminal wrongdoing. Murdoch just happens to be highly unpopular with a certain segment of the population and he happens to own a concern, now defunct, that offended the sensibilities of many. In a very real respect this reminds me of the big blow up over the NSA wire tapping of foreign phone calls. I'm sure that most of you remember that. Bush was beaten soundly about the head and shoulders, or at least a concerted attempt was made. Nothing came of it and that practice is still ongoing under the present administration, and the silence concerning the wire taps are deafening.

What I find particularly reprehensible is the behavior of those that want to throw Murdoch under the bus for no other reason than you disagree with him, or just don't like him. And this is coming from those of the bent that all things are just shades of grey and I shouldn't be so 'judgmental.' Well, what would you call your behavior if you are among those that want to hang Murdoch out to dry?

If there is a finding of criminal wrongdoing, AND Murdoch is found to be complicit, then by all means hang the bastard. But witch hunts are ugly things. Disgusting to the observer and they leave the participants with really bad tastes in their mouths long after the witch is burned and once you start tying someone to a stake based on your own sensibilities and personal preferences you can never be certain when those sensibilities and preferences might change and you find yourself tied to that stake.

It was a broadcasters' event some years ago. I had been invited to speak on a favourite subject: the BBC hegemony in broadcast news and the risk that its own package of tendentious assumptions – that Euroscepticism was a lunatic fringe irrelevance, that anyone who expressed concern about immigration was a bigot, etc, etc – was going unchallenged in the mass media. After I had said my piece, a BBC producer in the audience asked whether, since I was so concerned about the dangers of large media organisations, I did not have the same objection to the existence of the "Murdoch empire".

"No-o-o," I replied patiently, I did not have the same objection. If I did not wish to support Mr Murdoch's enterprises I could refrain from buying his newspapers or subscribing to his television service – and no one could threaten me with arrest and imprisonment for so doing. This was, I suggested, a rather significant difference between the two media corporations.

In the startled silence of his response, I assumed that it had never occurred to him (as I say, this was some years ago) that anyone could question the justification for the legally enforced licence fee since it was clearly, for him, rooted in the inherent moral goodness of the BBC – and by implication of the ethical standards which it purveyed. The BBC may be trying to inculcate a bit more self-critical awareness among its personnel now but that smug righteousness of the Left-liberal media class has not gone away. It is, as you may have noticed, in something of a triumphal frenzy at the moment.

Funny how people are ready to tear comedian Bill Maher and new asshole but want treat Rupert Murdoch, one of the most powerful people in the world who has never been elected to anything anywhere, ever, as if innocent until proven guilty. I suspect that any Murdoch investigation on either side of the Atlantic will conclude that he was well insulated from the dirt which gives him “plausible deniability” and that should be enough for many of you to conclude, political witch hunt.
