An ancient cottage in a remote location, where you find yourself one dark night. Perhaps you rented it as an escape from the pressures of the modern world, perhaps you have escaped there permanently, perhaps you stumbled across it and took shelter from the storm. The important thing is that in the night you hear strange sounds coming from below.

If you had known the history of the house, you might not have been so eager to spend the night. Maybe you knew and thought it just a story, or maybe you were drawn to it precisely because of the story. A hundred years ago, the story goes, the house was home to a man with a dangerous reputation. Though he was never charged with a crime in court, he was suspected of a great many evils, from corrupting young women and profiting at their expense, to practicing black magic, to murder. The truth of any of these stories is uncertain.

What is known is that in the summer of 1911, a girl from one of the regions prominent families disappeared without a trace. Her parents reported that her behavior had grown strange in the past weeks, and that they suspected some unsavory influence. The girl had been seen visiting the peculiar man in his ancient cottage. When confronted with the mob, he told them that he had sent her to a better place.

Several years later, it was revealed that he had meant Memphis, where the girl had eloped with the help of the man to be with her love. There was some regret about the unfortunate fate that befell the eccentric in the old cottage, but in general, the locals felt they were better off without him.

((this will be a ghost story, the spirit of the murdered libertine awakening and having his way with the unfortunate (or not?) visitor who spent the night of the anniversary of his death in his bed. Please PM any interest.))

I am an old role-player who took a little break from Lit, mostly due to RL. I also wrote under the name of Sky Jade. It looks like I am coming back to a new batch of writers here on Lit. Ah well, also room for new ideas I say.

The war has moved on, but the countryside has been transformed. Once a quiet patchwork of forest and farmlands, the people have fled, their villages plundered, the woods and fields littered with the dead and dying. Fires burned and battle raged, and left a waste of blood and ash, with just a few patches of green remaining. In the hellish world left in the wake of battle, deserters, bandits, corpse-robbers and worse become devils.

Korin wakes to this, and pain. Wounded in battle and left for dead, his armor stripped, he staggers to the river to clean his wounds and drink. He splints his broken leg, and cleans and bandages the cuts on his head and ribs. The war is done with him, he realizes, but he is too far from his home to walk on a broken leg. He will have to find a way to survive here, at least until he is able to travel.

Despite his injuries, he is still a dangerous man. Years of training with weapons has made his body strong and hard, and he is tall and handsome in a rough way. When a pair of bandits set upon him with murder in their eyes, he takes the club from the younger's hand and cracks the elder's skull with it. The younger man flees, and Korin can't chase him down. It is when he looks in the thicket the two had been hidden in that he finds the woman. She is tied to a tree, with a rag bound over her mouth to silence her.

"Are you hurt?" He takes the gag from her mouth gently, but holds the long knife he took from the bandit he killed at the ready. It has been a long time since he thought of women as harmless.
