G'day.

If one wrote a story and one had 10,000 hits ? ( nice round figure )

Authors, how many people do you think read the story?

It would probably depend on two things: what the reader was looking for; and how engaging the first two or three paragraphs were.

My guess is that about one reader in ten finishes reading any given story.

There's no way to guess. eroticstories.com actually tells you the % of people who clicked from the first page (which is much shorter than here) onto the rest of the story. That still isn't definitive, but it gives you a better idea.

I'm with Theegoatpig. Three.

The rest are bots searching for somewhere to leave a link, Google's webcrawlers, and someone's auto-clicker that went astray.

Ouch! And you guys think I'm a bit of a jerk! You're crushing the poor guy!

I think length factors in as well as how far they have to skim to find the word "cock, pussy or sucking"

I would go along with one out of 15 or so. Now how many vote? Oh jeez a percentage of a percentage!

The only sensible answer (which is pretty much self-evident) to a question like this would be "who could possibly know and it would be radically different from story to story, anyway." So it's naturally a question a thread would joke with.

Joke away, but it was a serious question.
I just wondered and yeah, one in 15 ; one in 20 is what I thought.
Thanks for your replys.

:)

I think it depends how long it takes to get to the good stuff. I know if I scroll and see that a story is really long, I'll scan through and see if it's worth reading. Some stories ponder over pointless details, and I find those are the ones I tend to give up on.

OK, how do you think a question like that can possibly be answered with anything but wild-ass guesses that don't mean anything?

I think last time I checked, my reads-to-votes ratio was 0.8% with a comments/feedback-to-votes ratio of almost the same.

That would be views-to-votes ration, wouldn't it? Views aren't reads. And there are too many variables at play for there to be a statistical meaningful comments-to-reads or votes-to-reads correlation.

There just is no statistical meaningful answer to this question to be had.

Sorry, gang, not every question that exists has a answer available to us.

I would guess about seven readers in ten would back click if the story exceeded two or possibly three pages...those are the dedicated wankers. In the main, if most readers aren't grabbed by the first couple of paragraphs, they're probably back clicking too.

Short version: There's no way to tell. ;)

SR, yep - my "reads" should have been "views," sorry.

There is no rhyme or reason to votes. It is frustrating to know that someone can invest the time to read a 1-10 page story yet not add the three seconds it would tate to vote. I have even received comments but the votes didn't change so they took the time to type a remark and still not vote.

Last chapter I mentioned in an authors note the only way we get paid is in feedback and votes. This was the first time I have ever solicited feedback/votes and that chpater got about 10 more votes than the last couple. Then again there was a pretty significant event in the chapter so that could have accounted for it as well.

I guess in the end the pattern is there is no pattern

Well, at the moment, I have the "luxury" of writing for myself and for a known audience. Posting stuff up on Lit and getting votes and comments is a pleasant bonus for me at this point. However, as I'm getting to "know" some people here, that'll be changing, as some of you will become part of my known audience. ;)
