Born and raised, although my heart pulls me to Germany. Yup there is a bit of Kraut in my family's blood, but it seems like I'm the only one who wants to go there LOL.
Yeah I read statistics the other day, over the past 5 years there have been increases from 80% to 160% in crime rates. I mean how the hell can you see this sort of stuff and then tell the people that the fight against crime is alive and giving good results? I swear if it wasn't for the fact that I carry a machete around tucked into my belt I would have been a robbery statistic by now. Fun thing is that as a security firm you can't do much either, the police have only been given the right to use deadly force over the past six months and already there have been reports of 7 innocent bystanders getting shot by the police.
I was reading up on Green Lantern, and thinking about forming my own idea for the various colors.
Oh, and I am not the only Jeff Zagst.
Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the seven (or is it eight?) ring colors already established as of Darkest Night?
As for the story I'd be willing to check out an issue. I'm not sure Record of Chrono Avatar would really keep me locked in place for very long. For the love of everything unholy in the eleven frozen hells you cannot have a "disease/condition" transfered by bites, produce fangs called Drakuul. I'm sorry, you can't. I suck at naming things as well, horribly. So much so that it's probably why I enjoy working in Fanfic because enough of the naming and basics shit it taken care of by the time I got there. LAzy yeah and it annoys me but god.
Granted I'm sure when you flesh it out you planned to have him learn the names of the countries/continents first and then come to the incredible leap of logic that this is alternate Earth, not him come to that incredible leap of logic and then find out he's in America and the enemy aren't even thinly veiled Russian Christians.
I like the dark seed corruption particularly if it can be well done. So far the closest to someone not fucking it up that I've seen is probably Naruto and even fucks it up more often than not.
No fair. I want an epic cool name.
I like the name Drakuul. It sounds kind of like Draco and Dracula. As for the alternate version of Earth, he figures that out because they speak the same language as him and certain things are similar, like computers and stuff. Though, the geograghy is a little different. Basically, all the Americas are more connected and are all part of the Emarikan continent. Then you got Eurasia, Africa, and Australia that are all connected and actually stretch south to Antartica, technically making it all one continent, Rapusia.
Which is pretty much the exact reason why you can't have it give dragon powers not appropriate vampire powers.
Unless their maps don't have words on them he'd find out they were similar geographically AFTER he had some idea of where he was. To me plays out like this.
I garantee you that if you were to take the average person wipe out most of the land marks they wouldn't know America from New Zealand much less recognize alternate America prior to seeing a map. Now upon seeing a map he'd go holy shit this is America! Wait why's it spelled wrong? Him guessing alternate Earth based on English almost holds together and I suppose a child that logic might hold. Considering the differences in your world it seems. . .unlikely that English would dominate. I suspect in a world with dragons n shit the Romans would have been a teensy bit more sucessful, and certainly no reason to believe that the English would still be the ones to dominate. This is that part in sci-fi fiction that you're not supposed to think about. Everybody everywhere's speaks English except a few misguided tribes on earth. That includes demons and other creatures that have been imprisoned since before the English Language was even whispered from lips.
The only explanation I can think of that makes any real sense would be if the tech somehow comes from various people throughout history popping though. Whatever Unk built is something that occurs naturally. I dunno lightning strikes while standing on silicon ore or something. The key here is to make it so complicated that when the uber fans call you on why exactly it wouldn't work that way you get to call them nerds.
I'd give it's fair shake down, gods above know I missed out on lots of good stuff (like most of Avatar so there's still quite a bit I haven't seen) because I said ha ha that's silly! There's also stuff that I thought was super cool and kinda skipped cus I knew I wouldn't get enough to satisfy. (alas poor The Cape, I knew good and damn well I wasn't getting a full season. Wonderwoman. . . you're probably fucked as well and you might not even make it to air.) This is kinda right in the middle where I think you went a bit over kill.
Specifically on the races unless you have a lot of need for separate races I think it makes more sense to have less. Not just from a we shoulda wiped these out standpoint. (I honestly don't know why your AVERAGE fantasy setting has goblins or orcs left.) There is also the fact that Big Show, Danny Devito and Vern Troyer are all the same species. I've been conciously trying to dial back the number of species in my fantasy realms it's just hard to get rid of some of the more established ones.
Well the first Human came from Germany in the 1800's, I keep forgetting what I read when it comes to my family history. He was from Soligen and served as a soldier for the governor, then he served as a personal assistant type of thingy for the governor and then he got married. Still have to figure out where that tree went further, but I did follow that bloodline to me, so I can say I have some German in me LMAO
Grant figures Amaroth must be an alternate version of Earth because, for one, like I said, the language. And yes, the equivilent of English is dominant in this world, even more so than in ours. And certain parts of Amaroth's history parallel's that of Earth. Like, elves first came to Emarika a few centuries ago, during which time the continent was mostly inhabited by tribes of goblins, trolls, and orcs. There were wars at first, but unlike the English and Native Americans in our world, the elves and savages eventually formed an alliance, leading to sciences becoming more advanced earlier that on Earth, because there were less wars. Plus in our world, Christianity smothered science until very recently, otherwise we'd have more advanced technology by now.
As for what Unk stumbled upon, yes, it has been there for ages. It is basically the two worlds, which exist on different vibrational frequencies, temporarily phasing through each other. When the teleportation pods were activated during this brief passover, it basically opened a doorway between the two worlds. But by the time Unk tried to go in himself, the passover had ended. It is a very brief event, but Unk eventually discovers that the passover occurs approximately once every forty days. He discovers this by teleporting items back and forth through the pods every single day, hoping the machine will malfunction again and recreate the phenomenon. Forty days later it does, and he sends a probe through first to check things out. He brings the probe right back and quickly views the data, then prepare to enter himself, but again, the connection is lost. He keeps checking every day and about forty days later, he gets another connection. He quickly slides one pod closer to the other, gets in, and finally sends himself over, but he reaches out and touches the other pod, teleporting it with him. He knows in forty days he can use that pod to teleport himself and Grant back to Earth.
Then, when the dragons are revealed later on, the characters discover these ancient beings can open portals between the worlds at will, or at least they used to be able to. This ability was stripped by good dragons ages ago, but they get it back in the series. It is also revealed the dragons visited Earth in the ancient past, being the source of many legends and myths of our world.
And as for the dragon powers, Grant becomes a sort of dragon vampire. Though, he is not undead and he doesn't burn in the sunlight. A normal vampire is basically a dead body that the soul is sealed to through the flowing of demonic blood. The blood keeps it from completely decaying but there is still an obvious paleness to the skin. Though, I find the cold skin part to be unrealistic, because vampires constantly have warm blood flowing through their veins.
In Grant's case, the venom from the Drakuul doesn't outright kill him because he is from a world where no magic exists. The people of Amaroth all have at least trace amounts of magic in their blood, and the Drakuul venom kills this, which kills them, because they need magic to survive. Since Grant has no magic in his blood at first, there is nothing for the venom to kill, and so instead it just circulates and spreads, eventually giving him some of the abilities of the Drakuul.
The Drakuul themselves were formed ages ago when a few desperate dragons were outnumbered and they formed a pact with a demon. They took demon blood and dragon blood and basically cloned an army of soldiers for them to use, but the resulting creations became abominations. Most of them were put down, but some managed to escape and breed. There is an ongoing effort to exterminate them, but new nests keep popping up.
Awesome post, Dormy. Though I had to zoom in because the font was so small, lol. My only problem is the reference to "us" being killed. Is she refering to all superheroes? Because I was saying before that Terry McGinnis became a key leader of the resistance. I was thinking he had other heroes recruited as well. Maybe you could change that last part to something like, "Since Lex's rise to power, most of the metahumans either joined him or have been killed. Only a handful of us are left to fight..."
Other than that, awesome post. BTW, do you like my nickname for you? Hehe.
Also, I have been considering doing a second DC game based on DC Universe Online. If I do, I'll play my Green Lantern character there instead, as well as Superman and a few custom characters.
Johnny Storm could be absorbing oxygen through his skin along with the flames. Obviously, his molecules realign to endure the fire, so maybe they are also restructured. As for Invisible Woman, I see your point, but there are ways around it. Her retinas only need a small amount of light to see, and she is only invisble to the naked eye. Reed could see her through that computerized magnifying glass thing. Which means she is still absorbing and reflecting light, just not at a level we can see with the naked eye. That might be enough light for her to see, or she may see things kind of hazy while invisible, not sure.
