The easiest way to WAG it is to look at look up crane kits on the web, and they will have beam sizes for ya. Here's a pdf you can download for little cranes. Or just use a S10x35 "I-beam".

I did a 24' in my shop for 1000 lbs
S8x18.5

I guess for 1500 35lb would cover it.

For lifting stuff, I'm always on the conservative side. Remember that codes are the MINIMUM requirements.

I had an engineer size it for me. He said I would have less than an inch of deflection with 1000 lbs
I only wanted it to lift my sled for an oil change but figured if I ever switched to cars and wanted to pull an engine, or sold the place, it would be good.
I ended up selling the place less than 2 years later

This shop I didn't bother putting one in.

My boss is one of those people too...somebody told him about safety factors and he thinks they are there to use. Cranes really only need 2 outriggers on the ground
