Sad / infuriating story from Rutgers University - what should their punishment be?

Sounds like you know all about sucking cock, why don't you educate us?

If you prefer that I show you how my girl sucks cock I will show you. Though I will be honest. You seem to know exactly how to suck without any help from me. Congrats. Job well done. I am all about education, but I will let you demonstrate your technique without judging you. Don't feel bad, it doesn't make you gay, just a cocksucker.

You have a girl? You look like a fag to me.

I do understand that being close to a female is foreign to you. I won't judge you for being a queen. You should appreciate that I understand who you are and where you come from

You're the one who brought up sucking dick, so obviously it is on your mind. So, what are you in the closet or something, and this girl is your cover? If you weren't gay, you wouldn't have brought it up.

Rutgers Freshmen Busted

This is from The NY Daily News in my city.

Even if they are sentenced to the full five years, what other repercussions will there be?

I have viewed many videos on the internet where someone was humiliated, and I occasionally wondered about repercussions (Or retribution) after the incident.

And what if Clementi had decided on a multiple homicide / suicide in revenge for this? Would our sympathies shift to Ravi and Wei had they died too?

You are cute when you come out of the closet. If you knew anything about me, or my lady, you would realize how foolish you are.
Of course you choose to be a dumbass and ignore it.

Short version: a guy sets up a secret video camera to film his roommate while he's off with his girlfriend. The camera catches his roommate having sex with another dude.

The guy - and, presumably, his girlfriend, who also knows about the camera - thinks this is funny, and tells people on Twitter. He then sets up the camera again, but this time alerts people on his Twitter account that they should watch his gay roommate getting it on live on a streaming feed, because he knows when it's going to happen. It happens.

Gay roommate finds out about being secretly streamed live on the internet. He kills himself.

So, you're the jury...
Sounds like illegal wiretapping to me.

Both of them should be getting it up the ass at Club Fed when this is over.

sadly, the fact that they can only receive a 5 year maximum highlights the fact that the criminal laws have not kept up with the technological crimes.
they directly contributed to the death of a person - in my book that is at least manslaughter and should be penalised as such.

he chose suicide. people choose suicide for a number of reasons. we have no idea what went on in his mind.

a woman might kill herself because her husband had an affair. does that make him guilty of manslaughter? no, it makes him guilty of adultery.

these arseholes are not guilty of manslaughter, they are guilty of various privacy crimes or hate crimes or some such...unless their express purpose was to bully him to death, which seems unlikely. intent matters.

and now they must live the rest of their lives knowing that they pushed a man to take his own life, knowing that their friends and families know it too. this won't just go away for them once they're released.

They can't be responsible for the suicide per se, people are responsible for their own actions. I guess it should be labelled as a pretty remarkable case of sexual harrassment.

There's also another victim there, the other guy they filmed, and who didn't kill himself. Expect a civil suit.

intent matters.

they intended to publicly broadcast an act that they knew, without a doubt, would be deeply humiliating and psychologically damaging.
and that led directly to this man deciding to suicide.

cyber crimes are just as damaging to people as any other crime, and can be argued to be even more so as they often have to be planned and orchestrated.
hiding the camera was an invasion of privacy - organising a public broadcast was premeditated.

being a contributing factor in someone else's bad choice isn't manslaughter.

they are guilty of the crimes they committed,
but not of the ones we might invent to satisfy our emotionally based sense of justice.

It's an awful story. The filming, the broadcasting. It was an invasion of trust and decency, and those who did it were bone-headed in the extreme.

But the choice to kill himself over the revelation of his homosexuality was the young man's own.

are you saying that the psychological trauma involved in having your intimate, apparently secret, sexual acts shown in such a public way has absolutely no impact whatsoever?
it's already accepted that psychological trauma is an adequate defense in situations of spousal assault where, for example, a woman who has never been physically assaulted but has endured severe emotional abuse by a spouse leads directly to murder.
how is this different?

Let's say that instead of killing himself, he took a gun and killed a random student walking around the campus quad.

Would that be his fault, or the roommate's?

of course it would be his fault.... but he didn't do that.
he was so traumatised that he couldn't see any other option.
that is real damage to a person.
like i said, i don't believe that the criminal codes have kept up with the new inventive cybercrimes.

Those college pranksters, just having a little fun, it was a joke, they didn't mean any harm.
Four to five, with time off for good behavior, unless the jury is liberal.

Again: there is no doubt that it was awful and cruel and immature and a betrayal of trust. Of course it has an effect.

But the kid's inability to see another option was not the inevitable result of that. The particular choice was the young man's own. I'm not saying he made it with the clearest mind, or that I don't have compassion for him. But just as we'd say, "well, something else was wrong there" if he'd killed someone else instead of himself, we need to remember, even in our compassion, that that's true here too.

I'm not forgiving the idiots who filmed him. But him killing himself was not the inevitable result of that stupid act. It's mitigated by something else, whatever it might have been, within the tortured young man.

i would pull any favours i had owing with the press,
and get their faces on the front page.
i'd make sure every potential friend, lover and employer they'll ever meet knows exactly what kind of people they are.

when they can no longer leave the house for the shame and the abuse,
they'll understand exactly what they did wrong.

I pulled some favors.
