WQ, I remember you telling us about a sailing problem you had & wonder how that compared with the Abby's experieces, was it that same ocean that she had her problem in?

same ocean, but not the same area - we were much, much further south (and our storm was one of the biggest ever recorded in the southern indian ocean).

this is actually a sore point with me.... i do not advocate allowing babies to sail solo.
they just don't have the skill, knowledge or strength to deal with what the sea can throw at us!
point made by a 16 yr old crying for help after losing a mast...... heck, we lost a mast too. and if it hadn't been for the collective skills of everyone aboard, there is no way we'd have made it to shelter as we did.
no way can a solo 16 yr old girl ever hope to be able to make the necessary repairs in order to get herself out of trouble.
i don't care how long she's been sailing for.

and there is absolutely no way i am ever going to believe that young jess did the trip entirely alone either - at the very least she would have had to have food drops, in which case she wasn't 'solo'.

I've had mixed thoughts on these sailing adventures we are hearing about & it's good to get your opinion as you have been these done that.

So are the storms more severe in the nothern or southern Indian Oceans?

An interview with Abby's dad on TV this morning had dad claiming all the "EXPERTS" who say it's the wrong time to be sailing the Indian Ocean have got it all wrong & he talked to the ones who know sailing in that ocean.
He also denied that they want donations & the report of a reality show were false.

the time of year doesn't really make a difference - in the summer there are cyclones coming from the north, and in the winter there are gales and storms from the south.
definitely more severe weather in the southern part of the indian ocean.... and more prolonged too (some of these systems can last for weeks).

the only issue is which direction the tradewinds are blowing, and you can always tack to make headway if they're from the wrong way (to 'tack' is to zig-zag across the winds to go forward.)

it will be interesting to see if abby can manage to stay away from all that paying-publicity - my guess is not.

Thanks for the info as you are someone who has been there & done that but think you story would be a lot more intetesting than her's.

I struggle to understand how teachers in my day coped as there were no student free days, there were no free periods & huge classes for them to cope with.

depends what you class a huge?
32 for a year 9 English class is ridiculous.

These student free days - teachers don't just sit around and do nothing. We have professional development. Our school has an Asian literacy focus - so we worked on putting that in more into the curriculum (2 hours)- how to Podcast (2 hours)- added more IT skills to our repertoire (1 hour) (as next term all year 9s and 10s are receiving a laptop care of Mr Rudd and 1:1 learning) Looked out how to build in the Australian Curriculum into the current school layout and provided feedback on the draft on the national year 11 and 12 curriculum currently under review for processing. (the rest of the day)

All in all - there from 8 - 5 hardly a moment free time. I'd much rather have the kids at school and be in normal class and not have to worry about the extra crap teachers are meant to fit in on free days and in their own time - weeknights and wknd.

Sorry RANT OVER. It was a shit day and a waste of time! I'd rather have been teaching.

Hope everyone else has had a good day - mine was a waste of time. But now out to dinner with a friend for her birthday.

x

I didn't realise you were a teacher.

Just your signature has re-awakened the whole sexy-teacher-in-detention thing every schoolboy has at some point.

And I thought I'd moved on to university-lecturer-during-study-break by now ;)

My daughter is coming over for a visit. It will be 3 1/2 years since I have seen her - the last time was when Gil and I got married. She will arrive around 5th July and stay for a couple of weeks. A quick 2 day trip to the Gold Coast will probably ensue during that time too.

I've explained to her that there will be days when Gil is on dialysis and she will have to find something to amuse herself on those days....I have plenty of books :D

just got home from the hospital - number1son breezed through his op.
i think he's feeling a little nauseous from the iron infusions though.... but he'll never admit it!
it has been a loooooooooooooong day.
food, some mindless tv, and bed for me - tomorrow will be just as long (with HIM coming home, i'm unlikely to get even one hr sleep!)

that's great!
you'll be totally pre-occupied being a mum again - and it's a good way to be.
a shame it's only for a few weeks, but i know you will make the most of it

It says it in my profile - you clearly just hadn't looked :D

as for the sexy teacher thing - don't even consider going there with me or asking about it - that crosses a whole other moral/ethical line for me.

Uni lecturer, not so much.

yay for WQ and Bandit for being good mums - I'm sure it's a dam tought job - but I can't wait (no that's a lie I can) to get there.

I finished my Graduate Diploma of Education in 2009 but my VIT has been held up. So I'm unemployed even though it should be easy to find at least CRT positions in town.

And I agree, it's a bit to close to home to do teacher-student RP anymore.

And I was totally surprised at how full on and strenuous a standard teaching day is, having to have five classes planned out, with the possibility of an extra, or doing detention. You may get holidays, but even most of those would be working, and the work during the semester is like a 10 hour day.

Wasn't what I was thinking, and you're right I hadn't checked.

I'm glad everyones life is more interesting than mine, hopefully a snow holiday is on the cards soon to make things more fun.

For the record, no republic.

But that's just because I like being part of the commonwealth, makes life in certain countries just that much easier.

Well both mine are young adults now (son 27, daughter 22) so my child rearing days are done and dusted ;)

gem I am a qualified teacher aide, in the past I have worked as school librarian and with kids with learning difficulties as well as helping out in classes with reading and maths. However this was in a small NZ country school of about 50 kids between ages 5 and 11, three classrooms with 2-3 classes in each room, around 20-25 kids to a room (the little kids' room had less kids than the others). Kids start school when they turn 5, no large intakes at once so you have kids on different reading levels especially in NE/Junior room so lots of small groups to take for reading, I used to take at least 3 groups a day :)

Bandit this is great news . good to spend time with your daughter ..

gema ... i guess this is only good for the kids staying at home having an extra day ..

and hi to everyone else Hope you have a nice evening

I enjoy cycling AB-where are you located? 20 minutes on a tready is a good start-my beginnings were similar back when I got my fitness kick in 2006. Now I'm a marathoner.

no score in the first half.

Sounds like life in general!
Glad your daughter's coming across-pity it's so long between visits though. My wife and I'll be at the Gold Coast myself about that time-we're there from the 1st to the 7th. One of these days we'll arrange a holiday with no sporting activity attached-we're there for the marathon!

Hi {{{{{gem}}}} So sorry to hear you aren't able to sleep. :(

Hope you do manage to get the rest you need.

Doing the finally cleaning. You know so the place looks "perfect" when Mom gets here. Everything is fine but one always wants it to be just right. :)

Hi {{{{{{{{Beauty}}}}}}}}

Well if you do eat something it might be a good idea to keep it light so it doesn't affect your ability to sleep. Hoping you do manage to get to sleep really soon and hoping it is a good sleep for you. :)

Love your AV! Great shoe!
