1: i never forget a politician is first and foremost a politician.
but what i see watching the exposure is a man putting himself forward as an attractive alternative to the old-school 'only labour or tory' options, especially for the new, younger voters. people are genuinely fed up with a lot of Labour's management style and yet would be loathe to embrace the Conservatives (and wouldn't piss on the BNP if they were on fire ...).
