I just had minor surgery and now I'm sitting here kind of floaty from the sedation.
The nurse said my vein wriggled.
I find this hard to believe. I am
getting too old to wriggle much
without aforethought. Except
for sex when wriggling is simply
de riguer, but this was not erotic,
just nurse and doctor cheery
and me trying to be a little less
sardonic than usual. I do try.
The drugs were fine as amontillado,
probably better, but the thrill
was brief and then they were doing
unspeakable things to me. I read
an essay once where an eight
year old used the expression:
Ten am. Staying still.
I understand that now.
I'm fine, it seems, healthy as beans,
and still able to wince just a little
at the doctor's New Jersey jokes.
(I didn't tell him I'm addicted to
Jersey Shore.)
