If law enforcement was what it should be it would not be necessary anywhere.

The right to shoot people by baring arms leads to the gun culture you have in the US. The arms race you have between civilians and criminals in the US makes no one safer or even feel safer. Shoot first and ask questions later.

I am sure there are lots of gun related accidents too. Hand guns are incredibly dangerous to untrained people or even trained but complacent professionals.

I do believe in the right to defend yourself and property against trespass but it is an inescapable fact that if the criminal suspects you have a gun he will come 'tooled up' and prepared to use it. I expect it is a lot more effective to keep a German Shepherd dog in the long run.

Ummm, nick, the criminals are in an arms race amongst themselves and the police. Most civilians still do not have a gun, well maybe most is a misnomer but well you know.

I am also going to point out, the gun accidents are when someone is drunk and playing with their gun becuase there are people around and can't play with their willy, when kids are showing daddies off to others or it's not actually an accident to begin with.

I mean seriously, I was cleaning it is so obviously bullpucky. When you clean a gun the first thingy you do is unbolt it because you clean the barrel first.

I never said so. If a burgular meets with a, ahem, unfortunate accident then so much to the good. However arming everyone is bound to end up with more people dead, the innocent as well as the criminals. This is a fact.

I was not suggesting everone buys a dog rather than in an unarmed society they are probably more effective than anything else.

The article is materially wrong and the painting of the Marine Col. played by Nicholson as a conservative is laughable as is the concept that somehow liberals are all concerned about individual liberties whereas conservatives aren't.

Inorder to accept the article as a serious examination of the differences between the liberal and the conservative one has to buy into the premise put forth by the author, as I can not take the premise seriously there is no point in commenting on the substance of the article.
