Clare Cops Buy Doughnut Shop
Nine Officers Purchased 113-Year-Old Bakery

CLARE, Mich. -- A few Mid-Michigan police officers are creating the ultimate cliché.

When the Clare Police Department got word that their beloved bakery and doughnut shop was shutting down, the department decided to buy it. The guys ribbed for spending too much time at doughnut shops outright bought one and they’re getting a lot of smirks and raised eyebrows from customers.

It turns out the previous owners were running low on dough and were just weeks away from folding up the 113-year-old bakery. So to everyone’s surprise and muted laughter, Clare’s nine fulltime cops saved the town’s doughnut shop. Now creampuffs and handcuffs – in a sense – go hand in hand, giving the phrase ‘protect and serve’ more than a dozen glazed, sprinkled or custard-filled meanings.

The officers will volunteer their time and won’t be getting paid. The store will be staffed by college and high school students. The donut store is also selling apparel through their Web site.​
This definitely gave me a smile for the morning, as did some of the merchandise (t-shirts, golf shirts, coffee mugs, mouse pads, and more) at their website. Ones that particularly tickled me were the t-shirt saying "You have the right to remain glazed" with the shop logo, and the shirts with "Fighting crime one doughnut at a time." :D

Three Torrington residents arrested for public sex

TORRINGTON (CT) - Three city residents were arrested Thursday evening after they were found having sex in public, police said.

Mindy Lomento, 41, 347 Maplewood Ave. 2A, and two roommates, Gregory Wanklin, 34, and David Perry, 23, both of 66 Woodbine St. were charged with public indecency and related charges. Police saw Lomento and Wanklin having sex in a wooded area between Migeon Avenue and Church Street. A concerned citizen reported seeing Lomento and Perry engaging in sexual relations before calling police.

Police said the parties were acting consensually and no allegations of sexual assault were made by Lomento or the two men.​

Louisiana Parish Revolts Against Speed Cameras
Sheriff in Livingston Parish, Louisiana dumps photo radar after church forced to tow illegally parked speed camera van.

Neither the churches nor law enforcement in Livingston Parish, Louisiana want anything to do with photo radar. In a statement yesterday, the parish sheriff's office explained that it has become fed up with Redflex Traffic Systems, the Australian company that uses a Ford Escape SUV to issue automated tickets worth between $100 and $464 each within the parish.

"Due to a recent series of events regarding Redflex and its representatives, the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office is discontinuing its participation in the parish's photo enforcement program commonly referred to as 'the speeder van,'" the statement explained.

The mobile vans operated by Redflex in Louisiana frequently park unattended on private property, including on residents' lawns. This practice became too much for the Carroll Baptist Church in Walker. On Tuesday, the church had the van towed off its property where it had been parked without permission. Redflex was not happy about having to pay the towing fees to recover its vehicle.

"It was brought to the attention of sheriff's officials that improper comments were made to the towing company employees by the Redflex representative regarding the towing of the vehicle," the sheriff's statement explained.

The van has stirred controversy in Livingston Parish ever since officials approved the contract one year ago. In April, the Louisiana State Police pulled the Redflex speed camera van over and gave the driver a $182 ticket for failing to signal on Interstate 12. Another trooper threatened to tow the van off of the Interstate. A Denham Springs police office issued the van a parking ticket for stopping on the interstate. At the end of April, the sheriff's office was forced to refund 2488 tickets because Redflex unfairly set the van in a location where the speed limit suddenly dropped from 70 MPH to 60.

A total of fourteen states now ban photo enforcement.​

Omigawd/ess... you just reminded me of something I'd just about forgotten, or at least not thought about in years (probably because I was so embarrassed about it).
