a discussion thread about moderating this forum

You flatter yourself too much. You are just an irritant. nothing more, nothing less.

TEX what keeps you from ignoring me? Put me on IGNORE and your problem is gone. I think its something else eating at you.

I guess this would be an inopportune time to point out that it was a moderator action that dropped Scouries's root thread into the AH to begin with?

Was it? I am delighted to say I have never read anything by Scouries, including forum posts. I wouldn't know Scouries from Scabies unless I had to seek medical treatment for one or both.

I've never read anything as despicable as this in the time I've been here either.

I'll second the comment from the pretty lady over there :D

I have never even heard of something being posted that came close to the vile things put up in the last 24 -36 hours. Some things need to removed. Who does it or how it's handled ... I don't know, but something needs to be done.

Of course, I ignore 99% of their posts all the time anyway.

There are several threads I just never read because of who posts in them.
Yes, but they bring their little friends.

And new posters figure this is a disgusting forum because it allows disgusting posts.

Well if Laurel is in favor of "free speech", how about a sticky at the top where we can vote for telling newbies who they'd do well to ignore?

New posters are still adults, and I would like to think they can make decisions for themselves. I'm not their mother, taking their hand and making sure they stay away from the 'bad guys'. Yeah, that's harsh, I know, and I'll probably get jumped all over for it.

No, I'm not going to jump all over you, but I will ask-- why?

Why should a conversational, close, community have to suffer the kind of hate speech that masquerades as "free speech?" That's not free speech. there can be a few enforced rules. After all, laurel decided she didn't want underaged sex or beastiality in the stories, and she has no problem enforcing that.

I'm all for using the hell out of iggy. But selective blindness does not cure the problem.

If you remember though, I posted further back how I thought sr's idea of deleting the posts and stories of the scum we're discussing was a good one. Clean up the AH of all the vile comments. Let things calm down first. As for myself, until this situation, I ignored them. They aren't worth my time. I'm better than they are, and I have the option of reading their filth or not.

And that's what I am talking about too.

so have I. But closing your eyes does not make the turd on your living room floor go away.

And I don't think that our feelings are what is important here, but rather those of our members who are wounded and grieving. When the primeval hunting band had a casualty, we protected them from the circling hyenas, not because we were worried for ourselves but because of the ancient ethic that 'we don't leave our people in there.'

If the hyenas were scared off, fine. If we had to kill a few to convince the others, welcome to the veldt!

It was a damn big turd the minute it showed up here, for crissakes.

As I said to Stella a few minutes ago in a PM . . . "This site needs the owners to step in now, not a moderator in my opinion. I know you're frustrated, just as others are. Laurel needs to read all this and do something if she wants to keep our respect."

Ignore them and they'll go away is a fallacy with some people, and the ones in question here are exactly that sort of monster.

Telling everyone to ignore them isn't going to make it happen. There's always going to be somebody new, or somebody curious, or someone who thinks they don't care until the troll finds the right place to stick a needle. Somebody is always going to quote them. Somebody is always going to bring them up. Somebody is always going to PM someone else because they "thought they should know"

Nobody replied to scouries or posted in his thread for a couple of months, not so long ago. There was an active effort to bump threads and move his off the first page, keeping even his posts from putting it in the eyes of anyone who didn't have him on ignore. Nobody would even type his name in the forum anywhere else.

You can see where we are today that it was a fruitless effort.

Trolls like this can only be eradicated, they cannot be ignored.

If you want to ignore them, it has to be a global ignore. Take the four screen names responsible for the reprehensible statements in the last few hours, and hide their posts/threads from everyone except themselves. Let them blather on and spew hate all they want to each other. When they create a new alt, add it to the list.

Personally I’m against the idea of a moderator for this forum. I think there’s a much easier way.

It’s something I’ve suggested before. It’s a 3 part program:

1 – use the IGNORE button

2 – allow every THREADMASTER to moderate his thread. Allow him/her to delete any comment he doesn’t want on it (as an authors allowed to delete comments on his stories that he doesn’t like/want).

3 – identify every ALT with its owner. Simply insert into every posters signature the other names he posts under. Let him have as many as he wants – just name them. If Lloyd_5 is the pilot just tell us. End the hiding. i wonder how many of you are prepared to have your ALTS identified?

The end result? My guess is that 80% of the lies, insults and mean spirited comments will not be made and that THREADMASTERS will quickly make quick work of the rest. And if someone doesn’t like a thread he or she will simply put it on ignore.

Attempted THREADJACKING (of which the Scouries thread has often faced) will be a thing of the past.

Threads will be allowed to remain on subject.

Happiness will reign in the Kingdom (Queendom?).

However it will be harder to run off those you dislike or disagree with. Which might just ruin much of your fun.

Too true. However, in real life it's much harder to ignore someone than it is on the internet. For the first time since I've started coming to this forum, I have seven people on my ignore list. I don't see what they post, even if it's about me (unless someone quotes one of them) and I let them go on and on, spewing the same old shit.

But when they attack someone's emotional pain, it's time for a moderator to step in and take charge, because sometimes putting the offending poster(s) on ignore is simply not enough. What's been said today by a select few is reprehensible and makes me not so proud to be a member of this particular forum.

So, in an answer to Stella's question: Yes, I'd like to see this forum moderated. I think its long overdue.

Gawd no.
