Betticus went back to the hospital

Yeah I'm back home. I'll detail what happened for you curious types.

I started throwing up blood last Thursday morning, lots of it. My roomie took me to the emergency room and in the less than 20 minute drive I completely soaked a towel in blood. I grabbed a bedpan while the triage nurse was trying to do paperwork on me and kept throwing up bright red, hot, fresh blood. It was hemorrhaging into my stomach from some blown open blood vessels, not the same ones that broke last week. My blood pressure was very low and they started three iv's, one in the femoral artery and started pumping in saline and platelets and red blood after that. I kept bleeding tho and they ran me in for an esophageal endoscopy, blood pressure was too low for anesthesia so as soon as the tube went down I started heaving. They couldn't stop the bleeding so ran me in to radiology for a surgery. They opened up the big vein in my neck and fed a line down with a shunt to the set of blood vessels that had burst in an attempt to redirect blood flow from there, thru my liver and directly into the portal vein which has a lower blood pressure. I passed out sometime before they started. The surgery was not successful.

So, the next day after being pumped full of blood and fluids and bleeding internally, shitting out blood all night they shipped me to another hospital to a surgeon with more experience. Once again the blood pressure was too low for a general anesthetic so it was a local at the neck where they re-opened the vein and went back in. Unfortunately I did not manage to pass out from blood loss this time and had to be alert and quite receptive to the pain through the whole thing. The surgeon put in two shunts and also managed to close the biggest of the ruptures that I was bleeding out through. I can say only one thing from the experience and that is that surgery hurts like a bitch. I got shipped back to the first hospital to recover and it took another whole day for the bleeding to stop.

The damn doctor at the first hospital called my father, you know, next of kin thing and told him that if the second surgery was not successful that I would bleed out and die before the end of the weekend. So, my father, stepmother, two sisters and a niece all converged on my hospital room in ICU on Saturday evening. I just wanted to be left the fuck alone but it was not to be. :(

On Sunday evening they moved me to a regular room upstairs and to my delight there was no one in the other bed. For about half an hour. They wheeled in a filthy, non english speaking old man from hell who was obviously dying from either emphysema or had gurgling lung, hacking cough, phlegm spitting, loud intolerable speaking disorder. His visitor smelled like he had been working sheep for a month without a shower. It was fucked and the stench smelled up the whole room. So on Monday morning when the nurse came in I told her that I was going to check myself out and leave. They convinced me to wait for the doctor to sign release orders as my insurance might not pay if I just left. They also had sewn in the damned I.V. in my groin that went into the femoral artery and I had to have them remove it for me.

They had shaved my nuts too while I was unwary.

So I got out of the hospital on Monday afternoon and have been coordinating between work, the doctors office and my insurance company on some short term disability. I don't have a date yet that I will be able to go back to work but at least I have three or four weeks of major medical sick time left so it shouldn't be too bad unless I have a relapse. They said if I have a relapse that I won't survive it and to take it very easy. I can't lift anything heavy, can only walk for exercise and have to be careful with what I eat and to top it off I can never drink alcohol again. They said not even one drink as it might cause bleeding around the shunts and that if that happens I'm fucked. In the prison way, not the good way.

Also, I've lost just over 25 pounds in under a month, 11 of it in the last week with the damned hospital stay. It seems that if your esophagus has burst blood vessels they don't want you to swallow even water. So I had nothing for four days, then some ice and finally they tried to feed me some putrid shit that almost made me hurl at the smell of it. Or it was the scent of it mixed with the filthy ass motherfucker who was in the next bed. His visitor also kept blatantly staring at my 24 year old nieces tits, it was so bad that she had to leave.

I'd like to reiterate, I can't ever drink even a single damned drink and the shunts are permanent, they don't ever come out. Not even a glass of wine with a steak. No beer, no fruity mixed cocktails, nothing. Ever.

At least you're still with us Betts!

You been spending time with the hammies I take it.

Sorry you've had to go through all this crap honey, big health issues suck big time.

*hug*

Those hammies have been spoilt rotten!!!!!

Even the lil mean one lets me hold her now

The hammies missed you ! Is there a name for all this you are going through?

That sounds like a horrendous ordeal, I don't even know what to say. I'm just glad your still here :rose:

Very sorry you had to go through all the pain and disgusting stuff (roommate and his visitors), and that you'll not be allowed anything alcoholic...

BUT!

Very glad you're back home with the hammies (as I'm sure they are), and on the mend. Take it easy on yourself, please, and follow doctor's orders... and even their *recommendations.*

Welcome home.

What about when the source of the bleeding is healed up. Can't they close the shunt then?

I'm sorry you had such a rotten time.

I'm relieved that you're doing better. If you didn't post by tonight I was going to call you tomorrow, and hope I wasn't bugging you.

*hugs*

What an ordeal! Glad you are home now.

Please take care!!!

For the most part, I have said very little since joining here but I have to say something now.

I have been following this thread very closely and sending healing vibes to you, Mr. Betticus... I am very glad to see that you are out of the hospital and back with your furry lil subbies. I am sure that they have missed you as have so many people (myself included).

It might be a pain to not ever have another drink of alcohol and you always have the choice to follow that rule or not. Either way, continued good thoughts to your healing.

I just read your post about what happened. Betticus, I'm so sorry.

You are a survivor though. I know that. You will make it through this. The worse part is over. Now be kind to yourself. Let yourself recover.

*HUGS and HUGS*

I'm so glad you are back home!
