This the OOC and Discussion space for a thread I'd like to do about a San Francisco pyschedelic-rock-blues band that tries to make it big in 1967. Kinda like the "I Love Rock n Roll" thread but without the competition. I'm looking for players who typically post a paragraph or two and have a good command of the English language and respect for everyone else in the thread. I reserve the right to determine who gets to play.

This wiki is required reading for anyone who wants to join the thread and is not 60 years old. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_of_Love

The storyline starts in the Spring, actually, at an free show in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. This is where the people in the band meet, while listening to the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin. They start jamming in the drummer's garage. They write some songs, figure out some covers (probably Beatles, but played with an edge), and manage to get some gigs opening for some of the local bigger bands, playing as "The Guardians". (Also in San Francisco at the time was Santana, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Country Joe and the Fish, the Steve Miller Band, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, among others)

They get their big break when they play a midnight set at a party in Palo Alto, which happened to draw a number of people from the Monterey Pop Festival, which was happening that weekend (this is where Hendrix makes his cameo).

From there, it's a no-holds-barred wild ride to the top, or as far as they can make it before crumbling under the pressure. A west-coast tour with the Grateful Dead or the Airplane, recording an LP, maybe an east-coast tour with Steve Miller or Creedence. Being a part of all the madness happening down at the Haight-Ashbury scene. Lots of free love...

Characters

The Guardians:

Lead Guitar: Jimmy MacIntyre. Played by myself, Fukensploogin
Bass guitar: Peyton Andrews. Played by Caela
Drums: Opal Tyler. Played by PaintaPicture
Singer: Lexi James. Played by Sexy_Curves
Keyboards: Chris Maynard. Played by myself, Fukensploogin (unless someone wants to pick him up)
If you want to play a character in the band but would like to play an instrument not listed above, we can discuss it, but I'd like to keep the band pretty tight, as I'm pretty committed to the type of sound the band will get after. Keyboards can be substituted for rhythm guitar. One of the guitarists is more than welcome to sing, in lieu of a singer, though Jimmy has an awful voice and just wants to play guitar.

I would like to see some of this era's iconic figures show up throughout the thread as cameos. If you're interested in that kind of scene, that would be awesome. Any member of any of the bands listed above is welcome. If anyone wants to play Bill Graham, that would be amazing. He would be the most obvious choice to be the promoter for the Guardians, as he was the promoter for just about every big name in San Francisco at the time.

Also welcome is Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, of course. Tom Wolfe (who wrote the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test) could also be around somewhere.

Other original characters are welcome as well. There are a whole helluva lot of people converging on San Francisco in the spring and summer of 1967.

Jimmy MacIntyre has been in San Francisco for about a year now. He's 22 years old. He hitchhiked to San Francisco all the way from a very small town in Georgia with nothing but the clothes on his back and an acoustic guitar. When he got to San Francisco, he got caught up in the hippy scene. He went to the Acid Tests and the Be-Ins and the free shows in Golden Gate Park and every other event he could find where people like him were gathering. There always seemed to be more. He slept most nights in an attic crawlspace on Haight Street, unless he'd found a girl, in which case he was at her place (which often was more dilapidated than his own).

He played his guitar on the street every day. He never made much money, because there wasn't much money to be made. Everyone was poor, but they were all so rich because they had each other and they all took care of each other. Jimmy played them songs, strumming his acoustic guitar and blowing on a harmonica and singing the blues off-key.

This sounds really sweet! Can I snag the drummer spot? Also...should I post a bio here or would you prefer that I PM'd it to you? awesome thanks! :)

I figured I'd ask since some people prefer it.

Opal had never been a girl to sit there and be patient. Growing up in the city of Chicago she always wanted something more...and one day she got it. After hearing her mother gripe about those 'heathens in San Francisco' again she decided thats where she needed to be. At 20 years old she shoved some clothes in a bag, grabbed all the money she had and hit the road to hitchhike to San Francisco. The 5'9' beauty was picked up by small time band that was traveling the states to play their music and eventually end up at the flower child mecca. While she traveled with the band(I havent really decided if it was famous or not but i may figure that out in a bit) she learned the ways of the free-spirit...and how to rock out on a set of drums. She became rather talented but never really thought further on the idea.

Once her and her now friends and lovers made it to their final destination they parted ways and hoped to meet again some day. The now 21 year old had finally made it to where she knew in her heart that she belonged. Over the next couple of months she wandered the city meeting tons of people, sleeping where she could, eating whatever people could give to her, and listening and playing as much music as she could handle. She had a decent drum kit that she kept in a nice woman's garage. The woman was a little older but though it was better that Opal had a central location where she could sleep and be 'safe' but still free. Although opal appreciated the offered 'home' she was usually much deeper in the city causing all sorts of mischief and discovering the things she had missed out on for so long.

I dont have a picture but I hope this works.
She's 5'9" with slightly tan skin, long slightly wavvy brown hair that falls to a little below her shoulder blades. Blue eyes, thin but with some curves to her...not a complete stick. She can usually be seen in a somewhat low-cut loose fitting cotton shirt, pants/jeans that have holes and have obviously seen better days, bandanna on her head, sandals, and drum sticks in her back pocket. Rarely seen in dresses or skirts, and sometimes wearing a brown leather jacket that was a taken as a 'gift' from one of the guys she traveled with.

I hope that works! Let me know if I should change anything. :)

It's great, thanks! I don't want to start until we get a few more committed players, but hopefully that will be sooner rather than later.

I'll pick up the part of the Bass Player if that's alright.

Name: Peyton Andrews aka Raven to her friends, only her family uses her actual birthname.
Age: 20
Personality: Very laid-back, intelligent, quick to laugh but also firm in her beliefs and enjoys a good debate on them.
Appearance: See attachment
Bio: A native of San Francisco she's one of the rare few who can actually go home each night. Her parents don't agree with everything she says and does but they still manage to be supportive and are, almost always, willing to feed and house at least a couple of her friends each night which makes her home a common place for people to rotate through when times are rough. Knowing she has their support and love gives her both a sense of security and freedom that lets her try new things and explore all her options without the worry many of her friends have of where her next meal will come from. When she leaves each day she always packs more than she will need so that she has plenty to share with those friends who aren't as fortunate as she knows she is.

Thanks for joining up Caela! We'll have to figure out how your character hooks up with Jimmy and Opal. Maybe she's met one of them before, and they run into each other at a bar, and ask her to come jam? Or you could be at the Country Joe show in the Panhandle. Or we could meet up with you the next day at the protest march.

I've been thinking about the hooking up part... if it's cool with Painta, how about she hooks up with them at a bar, or party maybe, after the show. That way you guys can get your rhythm together and have some fun before I join the game.

That's fine with me! I'm really easy going...so whatever works best. :)

Lexi James
19 years old
5'8
blonde straight hair, ends a few inches past her shoulders
icy blue eyes
thin figure with feminine curves

At 18, Lexi left her home in Milwaukee for California. She packed what she could use and share in a couple bags, and emptied the account her parents had started for her college and future. She took a bus to Missouri, and met some people with the same plans who had a van with an extra seat to San Francisco.

She shared what she had with others, and they did the same for her. Concerts, rallies and parties were her life, and where she met friends, who could tell her where the next big thing was going to be.

While her style could change day to day from a flowing cotton dress to jeans and tie-dye shirt, her hippie attitude and life style never did. She loved music, and sang with local bands here and there to make a couple dollars. While she never had any lessons, her voice was a gift, still undiscovered by many. When she had the money she stayed in someone's house and when she didn't, she could always find her friends and crash in their van.

looks like we got us a singer! thanks sexy! Lexi's great. Can't wait to make some music! I think that Lexi and Raven should already know each other, and meet Jimmy and Opal at the bar that they're headed to right now.

I can go with Lexi and Raven already knowing each other. Since she hasn't posted yet I'll write up a solo post with Raven getting at the club where she agreed to meet up with friends (including lexi) that night.

I'm gonna take this opportunity to flesh out Chris' character.

Chris Maynard, age 25. Classically trained pianist. A San Francisco native who recently returned home after years of classical music school on the east coast and a year in Chicago playing jazz and blues. He's fascinated by the psychedelic sounds coming out of San Francisco and so has returned home intent on being a part of the scene. He's quickly adapted to the grungy hippy style. He's had a few jams with a few bands but nothing he's been too crazy about. He's been working as a studio musician in SF, making a decent living but not really playing music that turns him on.

They were talking about a bass player though, so I think it was open for you to go first.

lol...We should have talked a couple days ago! I was just waiting for your reaction to them coming over while you were waiting for me to respond to the bass player comment.

Did I mention that I'm blonde IRL???

I'll go post.

I'm so glad that I wasnt the only one that was kinda confused on who went next lol. (not blonde but I still have moments). :p
