Why do you submit . . .

. . . poetry? ;)
Someone has asked this question before awhile, but since there are new-ish Regs here, I'd like to ask it again. Why do you submit your poetry on Literotica? I'm not asking about the Poetry Feedback & Discussion forum, but the main submission and the Editors posting your poems.

This question is not only directed toward new Poets, but also for those Poets who've been here for years, like me. I've been here since November 2002 (!) under my neo alt and (several others too) the reasons why I've submitted poetry here has changed a few times over.

I haven't submitted a new poem since I established my 2008 me.

When I did and when I do is usually because of an STD or other challenge requirement. I find I prefer cluttering up the threads and then adding my stuff to my editred account. I keep most as "Reader Access Only" there since I can claim I've workshopped it on this forum and it's never been published elsewhere when I send it out to editors. :).

I don't know, exactly.

My attitude on this changes from time to time. I guess the main thing would be that I am interested in what ordinary people think. (Yeah, yeah. That raises the question of whether people who read Lit, and more particularly, people who read Lit poems, are ordinary. Probably not, but as I hope to explain, I think they may be more so than other venues I'm aware of.)

As I've said before (and before and before), I write mainly because it is interesting. It's entertainment for me. Kind of like doing crossword puzzles without having to know that snee is a four letter word for dagger or that erse is an alternate name for Gaelic. I like to try different things in writing. Some work, most don't. But, as I said, it's interesting to me.

What I like about submitting poems here is mainly the comments I get. That's feedback from real readers, however few and far between they are. The votes are also interesting, though basically meaningless, but they generate enough information that I like to keep them on. I did do the online publishing thing for a bit and got zero feedback. Had one experience with an editor that was helpful—though very, very opinionated—but my experience was that most times editors either just print things or make changes without consulting you, neither of which is helpful for learning anything about whether your writing is any good or not.

I know some people here have gravitated towards online communities like Edit Red, like Champie and NJ, but feedback from other people trying to write poems is not always the feedback I am looking for. It can be very helpful, but doesn't tell you what someone who is not trying to be a writer thinks. Which is what I like about Lit.

In some ways, the best comments I get are from the much reviled Anonymous. Many of these are, of course, the generic your poem sucks, but oftentimes they tell me things about what they didn't like about the poem. Really didn't like about the poem. Usually this comes down to me not saying something clearly, or getting the tone wrong, or something like that. It's useful information, though, and I am grateful for it.

So I guess what I like about submitting poems to Lit is the chance, however small and rare, of connecting to a genuine opinion about something that I wrote. Good or bad.

It's how I learn things.

Slowly. If at all.

I submit poetry to the general submissions board for feedack. My reason for writing on any given day can vary, but the appreciation of feedback never wanes. I don't pay particular attention to the voting system, as it makes little if any sense to me. I find that you're likely to catch the eye of readers that don't necessarily frequent the forums when you submit your writing. Brings somewhat of a different dynamic to the feedback you receive. Something akin to cross promotion, I guess. It's also interesting to see how people interpret your writing. Likes and dislikes aside, it fascinates me to see the many meanings readers can pull from a single written work.

I don't submit anymore but I've been tempted to. Unfortunately, I'm too paranoid to do it ever since I had some poems plagiarized. If I get over myself anytime soon and submit again, then I'll do it because I'm a creature of habit. This is home for me.

I submit things, (at least the 'poetry' things) as in actually put them up here for publication, when I think I have something that deserves and needs an actual review. If this were the AH and there were no volunteer reviewers, I probably wouldn't put anything up. I really respect the opinions of the people who are volunteering to review. That's what drew me to this place initially.

well, that and the nekkid pictures.

If I just want to run something up a flagpole, or see something on the screen to see how it looks, I put it in one of the poetry threads. I see it as 'workshopping' as opposed to the 'finished products' I put in as actual submissions. Those are pieces that theoretically I'd send to literary magazines, if I did that sort of thing.

I submit stories to shock and appall people, so that's different.

Thank goodness for that!!!

Tell me more about it. I am sure that others are interested too, naturally.

Are poems on Literotica more prone to this kind of abuse than at other Internet places?

I'd say, that by posting the same poem in several Internet places, you get a better protection for your poem from being plagiarized.

I don't post mainly because assholes spoil it for me. Actually, I hardly write in English at all because of this. I am too lazy to search for nice Internet English language poetry portals. Worse than that, I doubt that any exists. (I wish I knew that Literotica had the ignore option earlier, and I wish that I would appreciate such a feature earlier). And my minor reason for not posting on Literotica for a longer time is that the Literotica software posting and editing procedures are user unfriendly. On the top of it, Literotica messed up the format of my poems. I would put my customary effort into formatting, and later Literotica would carelessly and thoughtlessly destroy it. It's so unprofessional of Literotica.

This is home for me.
How nice, Eve, I am glad for you. There is no place in the world, nor a group of people, that I can call mine, that I can claim any true membership. It was a cosmic bug (error) that I happened on Earth.

Hello, Senna! I think some people don't take Lit very seriously, like they would many other e-zines. I suppose they figure it's a good place to lift someone's work, thinking who is going to know or care. And that may be because of the volume of poems on Literotica and the fact that they publish pretty much anything.

You're an accidental earthling. ;)

Hi Eve,

authors contribute to the problem by changing their nicknames too often, and thus destroying any contiunuity. They themselves quite often publish the same poem under different nicks on different occasions. That covers up the stealing by thieves, when people may assume that the dishonest "auth2" is the same person as the original author "auth1".

Best regards,

After some thought, I believe the reason I still submit poems is that I have no where else to put them besides my LiveJournal. I think I'd rather here then not ever seen.

My fridge is covered with kid art. "Look what I made, Mama!"
Poets are the same way. Literotica is our fridge.

He knows that when he pisses me off that I'll either write a poem about it or do stick figures. :D

That's a very interesting av btw. It looks like you're hanging upside down, like a bat. Lol! But I know you just have your legs up in the air. Which is probably hotter for most guys (and Bijou heehee) than you hanging like a bat. I like the bat idea, but as we know, I'm strange.

Legs up in the air (nonsexual) pic turned upside down. Hey, check out my profile pic.

Actually, you didn't know this yet, but the bat is a pretty important thing to me, so it works even on that level.

I was gonna blurt about Eve's AV and sig in the blurt thread, but since you're already hijacking in here I'll just do it here.

blurt:

Eve's AV is most excellent. Reminds me of bats.

and the sig line picture is killin' me.

One of the first things smithpeter ever said to me is "Eve is a genius." She's a bit of a demented genius, but I believe him. And I always picture her really short and cute, but I know she's tall. And cute. :)

I don't throw the term around lightly. But yeah. Genius. I've read her stuff. VEry comfortable calling her that.

yeah, I am hungry for my own kind...
I think Ezra said something like that.
You remind me a bit of him, a little full of yourselves. With some justification, but with the same fatal flaw of not seeing the possibility may be doing something better, another view maybe right.
As for me, I only claim 50%.
laugh ;laugh, kiss-kiss and all that smiley crap

OK why? What do you see? Specifics please. Smith I presume is no longer around to say why? If he ever did. Angeline doeth the same. Why? Not that I disagree. Consider it a challenge. Why? Show me?

You too Senna, Eve does a few things I don't think you can do. But at least you have in the past voiced why things don't work and too often these threads look like 'gushing for gash'

Go for it, why is Eve a genius?
Don't give me the knee jerk - You don't think... crap. Eve knows I consider her a genius, even a few reasons why.

And really this "Eve is a genius." with the little qualifier "She's a bit of a demented genius" is rather old.

Eve is a gifted writer, that uses non standard techiques and often what you get is not what you would expect. Original. She is a fucking genius. Period. Now fucking WHY? Enough of the book jacket blurbery.

In the next couple months, I may have some time, lets explore this is some depth. Maybe another fucking genius, Tzara, the best and the brightest, who has a little trouble with road signs. We can explore that also. What say Tzara, another Interact?

I shall be off now,
smiles:D
