Anyone have any experience with them? I just read the wiki and was kind of fascinated. Comments?

Oh they are fucking awesome, dude!

A superior sidearm in my view.

I have found that you need a good deal of upper body strength to be able to handle them properly. I was not as careful as I might have been the first time I
fired one and it almost knocked me on my ass.

Money well spent if you purchase one.

Handgun schmandgun.
Up here, you can empty the clip and the bear will still eat you.

I think its sort of like that Bugatti that can go 250 mph. Other than the thrill of having one, the utility is lacking.

What the fuck are you talking about man?

how exactly is "the utility lacking"

This seems rather typical of you, though.

Ok, for the sake of discussion, what is the utility of a Desert Eagle?

Here we go again.

I am going to give you the old "if you have to ask then you will never know"
bit that you seem to be so much in love with.

Asking that question is rather like asking what the utility of any firearm is.

This is just me, understand, but the model I owned was not the flash one,
all fucking shiny and shit. Matte black all the way.

Is it a bit of a fetish item? perhaps. I see it as an object d'art.

Its a simple question. I'm not making judgments.

I didn't ask about the utility of any firearm. I asked about this one.

If you want to attach more to a machine than its purpose, I don't see a problem. I do try to discourage emotional relationships between people and machines. It always the human that gets hurt.

I have come to prefer revolvers over semi-autos for cartridges approaching .44 Magnum length and power, and for hunting. The reasons being:

a) The size of the grip. Even with large hands the grip is very large in a semi-auto chambered for long cartridges.

b) The ability to shoot low power cartridges. For hunting and high power cartridges, it is very useful to be able to shoot loads of different power. Most semi-autos can't handle low power cartridges - not to mention some loads that are very heavy with a long length (there are some heavy bullet loads for magnums that are very useful for hunting that make the cartridge rather long, but within the spec for length for the cartridge). I've even had to reconsider some revolvers because their cylinder wasn't long enough for the longest loadings.

For something like the .22 magnums (including the new magnums), the semi-autos might be nice, but then again you have the problem of the low power loadings. The advantage of a semi-auto (to me at least) over a revolver would be that you can theoretically get better precision, accuracy and more velocity due to the design. Still, I prefer the versatility of the revolver.

As for Desert Eagles, they always seemed a tad too large and heavy (4+ pounds) - approaching the weight of a lightweight rifle. If you are going to carry that much weight around then get a light weight rifle and do the job right.

Ok, for the sake of discussion, what is the utility of a Desert Eagle?

Hunting. A lot of people hunt with handguns.

Silhouette shooting - long distance shooting at steel silhouettes with handguns and rifles.

Bowling pin shooting.

Just having something that is fun to shoot.

Most people don't need handguns, or firearms of any sort for that matter, so there is little utility in them when you get right down to it. They just enjoy owning and shooting them.
