I was talking with one of my R.N.'s today about comfort foods. She happens to be from Norway and my family is Germanic.

We talked about such things as Pickled and smoked fish. Sharp flavored cheeses on breads. All of the things we grew up with.

One of my co-workers who happens to be from Brazil over heard this and started turning green. She couldn't understand our enjoyment of foods like this. (Hey I also like her comfort foods.)

Now here was the big difference. She thought the ideas of some of our comfort foods was disgusting and yet she couldn't imagine anyone not enjoying her foods.

So what are your comfort foods others would consider disgusting?

Homemade blood sausage with a side of hot sauerkraut covered in homemade croutons.

-goes purr-

Of course, not being able to get ANY of that often, I'll go with fresh apple pie, or homemade ice cream.

I wouldn't call this a comfort food but it will make you laugh....I'm from Minnesota and grew up eating potato chip hotdish....anyone else? I still make it once in awhile but for some reason can't get anyone else to partake with me!

And this is?

Tater-tot Casserole.
For some reason most of my family hates it.
Oh well, more for my daughter and I.

A couple of others for me.

Take those left over Pasta Shells or Elbow Macaroni and save them. Beat a couple of eggs and mix is some garlic powder and some fresh ground pepper. Place noodles in frying pan and add the eggs. Fry until eggs are done and serve. (I often add things like slivers of precooked Anduile Sausage or Bacon to this.)

Take your left over Mashed Potatoes. Melt some butter and mix in as well as some powdered Garlic and maybe some thin sliced onions. Heat a frying pan and coat with Butter, Take a small amount of potatooes, about the size of a golf ball and drop into the fry pan. Flatten and fry.

Eggs cooked in Bacon Grease.

Bisquits dipped/soaked in Bacon Grease.

Take your left over Bisquits and store them in the fridge. The next morning split these Bisquits and add a pat of butter as well as a dollop of Jelly. Close and place in the microwave for 15 seconds.

Another bit of comfort food for me is something we used to eat while camping. Take a slab of thick Bacon. (1/4 inch or thicker,) and cook over an open flame or coals, Serve this on thin sliced, toasted Sourdough Bread. Tasty. If you happen to have eggs hard fry one and place this on the bread as well.

Potato chips (crisps to those on the right side of the pond). I'm sure I'm the only one in the world who can stomach those.

I didn't know there was another way to cook eggs :D

The rest is straight out of deer camp :p Big YUM! :D

YES, YES, YES!!! Especially when made into Navajo tacos, piled high with meat, cheese, veggies and sour cream. OMG, six thousand calories per serving and each one is wonderful!

I like mine with butter and honey. Yum. My SO makes the best damn frybread in the world.

Something else that I enjoy... and have been having lots of recently is home-made buscuits & Gravy... MMMMM...

Had lots of crappy versions in the Army, but now that I can cook it myself, it's so damned easy to do... and so tasty.

My number one comfort food is a carne asada burrito solamente queso con mucho salsa caliente.

or a double double, animal style no tomato.

I am amazed at how often people turn down my offer of peanut butter and syrup sandwhiches. They're simply wonderful.

Spoonful of PB, dump in enough pancake syrup for a good consistency and viola, a wonderful snack.

And yet some people tell me I'm sick and refuse to even TASTE it :(

edit:

Ohhh I almost forgot about green pepper jelly.

butter crackers, slathered with cream cheese, and dollop some green pepper jelly, ohh so yummy.
