besides you too and brettj what other authors hang out here?

Hail to the chief [ cue music ]

Good [ late ] afternoon & [ early ] evening to all.

Welcum to the thread Seth, I am BrettJ - founder and keeper of the asylum.

Okay - you've been told who writes [ both RED and I are prolific, as is Geronimo ]

Ideas [ for example, it is "grammar" ] that will help you not to need as much editing

If your computer does not have a spell check, most E-Mail programs do. Cut and paste your finished story there and hit the program it provieds [ on Yahoo when you compose, it is a little icon that says "ABC" ] Keep your story window open at the same time and make corrections where needed. On occasion, it will correct a word you don't want corrected [ I spell blonde this way - and it doesn't like slang or certain words ] but it should help enormously.

Other most common mistakes - changing tenses in story [ current to past or vice-versa ] and your / you're. To and too is another common one.

Writing isn't always easy, but once you get into the habit, it bcumz sumthig u wil lyke two dwo a lott.

Darned spell check - doesn't always work here.

More

JANE aka PLAINLY_JANE is yet another author in this group.

Geronimo and I also do a fair bit of writing for magazines [ brag alert here ] which means yes, we are professionals [ i have a major deadline looming for Monday - have to finish 5 stories by then ]

Hi to you CHARGERGIRL, hope your day went well [ I slept a helluva lot ]

Tried this and it didn't stay, so Attempt 2. Here are some common mistakes I see when editing. Spell Check won't catch them, because they are spelled incorrectly, just used inproperly.

TO = as in TO the store
TOO = as in TOO much
TWO = as in TWO girls in my bed [ hey, I can dream ]
THEIR = denotes ownership, as in THEIR bed
THEY'RE = as in THEY ARE going to bed
YOUR = as in YOUR bed
YOU'RE = as in YOU ARE going to bed

Hope these help as well. There are a few more, but these are the most common.

Brett really? what kind of stories and magazines? you don't have to name names of course. and ...a small hint as to how you got involved in that?

I work [ as does Geronimo at times ] for a company called Group MVP, based here in Canada in Montreal. At present, I am edging near [ or may have hit already ] the 100 stories published mark. They found me by using the "Writer's Market" feature that is available on LIT. Been working for them about 3 years.

They publish a variety of Digests and "Slicks" [ picture mags ] and I have written for almost ALL of them at some time or another.

That's really awesome. hmmmm i'm actually going to be taking some creative writing and literature classes and hope to write professionally at some point as well. I use lit as my testing ground.. lol that and it's a ton of fun!

Musings

In my case, I take my work for LIT as seriously as I take my writing for cash, in some ways, even moreso.

Sometimes the stories I write for my publisher get re-written and re-edited for LIT, sometimes the other way around.

Why I take LIT seriously is the people here who take time to comment and write are giving me part of their time. They have [ hopefully ] some expectations as to what they will get when they read one of my stories [ I would say I have fans ] and I think it's an obligation on my part not to let them down. So I take care with what I write and hope they will enjoy the read. Not always [ had a few flops ] but I always try.

I took "Creative Writing" as well, and good luck - but all it can do [ IMHO ] is polish a talent. Some can write, some can't. It may teach you techniques, but I think the imagination has to be there.

Very nice. At first it was just to see if I could write a story.. my first one was rejected 2 or 3 times. I've written essays and the like before but never complete short stroy with dialogue. That was very hard. I wrote my second story before the first one was even submitted. Finally within a week they were both published it was very thrilling! So I decided to write more and more and more. Then I met some fans including Busty Jessica who I've written I can't remember how many stories about. then I started trying different perspectives and taking requests for stories and creating stories from random General Board threads. Haven't had the time to really write in a while ...I just squeezed out two horrible stories to break the writers block.

I'm definatly a hack who writes the short strokers but...it is fun and I know that there is talent and imagination down there somewhere so...i'm going for it. Glad there are authors like yourself here and i love this place! lol

Ttfn

LIT is my home - getting a nice compliment on a story can brighten my spirits after a bad day [ of which I've had far too many lately ]

Good luck - I am off for now, but will BBL.
