The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

This is the first year I've not seen one mention of either November 22 or December 7. We hippie boomers are dropping like flies.

While 12/7 is an important date, it is also the birthday of my little brother who unfortunately is not with us anymore. He would have been 58 and I hate that drugs and mental illness took him so early. I am always thinking that if I had tried harder to pay attention to him instead of pursuing my career, I could have helped him get through it or avoid it in the first place.

My little brother died at 53, from mental illness, though not including drugs. He couldn't handle living independently and was well over 400 lbs. Everyone had lost contact, and I didn't learn until two years later. He had a heart attack in squalid conditions similar to the film Seven with gluttony.

I had made two considerable efforts to help, yet he still couldn't manage. I've learned to try to accept the things I cannot change; Have the courage to change the things I can; And, of course, the wisdom to know the difference.

He's my half-brother, and all the males on his father's side died before 65, so there's that, too.

@Candy_Kane54, the Lobos will play Minnesota in the Rate Bowl in Scottsdale on Dec 26th. I like the idea of playing a Big 10 team. "Rate Bowl" is the latest name for what has been called the Copper Bowl, the Insight.com Bowl, and a few other things.

The New Mexico Bowl will be on the27th between North Texas State and San Diego State.

Pretty great weekend, Denver won (somehow), KC lost, now if only Philadelphia will Fly, Eagles, Fly! And yes, we were in Vegas this weekend. How are all my friends here?

I had a (female) friend in college who I watch bowl games with one year. She rooted for the team whose uniforms showed off the butts of the linemen the best. She was happy. Her favorites (they had virtually see through pants) won the championship that year.

Has anyone here read Ian McEwan's latest novel, 'What We Can Know'?

I'm only 20% of the way through, but all I can say is, "Wow."

It demonstrates that most of our threads on authorial technique and style are incoherent babbling by children playing at being adults.

And technique aside, emotions and ideas explode from every paragraph.

The only other recent novel I've read that comes close is Samantha Harvey's 'Orbital,' which won last year's Booker Prize. Both books shatter (it's too strong a word for what they do, but close enough) the usual storytelling conventions, but produce emotionally powerful results.

Maybe we writers should stick to controlling the dialog in our stories, and leave the dialog in forums up to the participants?

The forums are voluntary.

Well, the truck was packed by three professional tetris players, and we are finally heading west. I was still shoving stuff into boxes at 1.30am before they turned up. I am so tired...

I had things in boxes I should have gotten rid of years ago, but it was good to reminisce before they got tossed. Here's a short story I wrote in grade 6 a bit over 50 years ago.
