Testing the waters: a Fan Fic challenge next year?

@FreyaGersemi Would it be an idea to add a "story hour" slot to LitCon? As in, a session where the "guests" tell stories about other writers' characters. Two lines to frame the story-within-a-story, and then just insert the story there.
Sure. Or characters can meet at the conference and decide to leave and do whatever. Or meet at the conference, exchange numbers, and get together three months later. Let your imagination run wild!!!

Thanks @FreyaGersemi - as you know, I think your novel event idea is one of the best we have had, and I applaud you for both coming up with it and running the actual event so well last year.

There is scope to tell any story within it, as you confirm. I know authors are already working on their contributions. I hope it’s a massive success.

I'm not going to say "no", because I think it should be an inclusive event, fan fic in the broadest sense. That's really the only way to breathe life into a category that's largely dead here in Lit.

But I'll repeat my caveats:

Anyone fanficking Lit content will have to make sure that the readers understand that it's fan fic. You'll have to get the original author's express consent before playing with their characters and setting. Odds are that most readers won't know the original.

The thing about fan fic, and particularly erotic fan fic, is adding a transgressive element to characters or a world that so many people know. In my OP I mentioned Luke and Leia, and Ross, Rachel and Monica, and Velma, and I'm pretty sure almost everyone immediately knew who they were, and probably had some idea about how the erotic fan fic would play out. Fewer people probably recognised Shagrat and Gorbag, but if they know they're minor Orc characters from The Lord of the Rings they might be tickled by the idea of gay Orc sex in what's a pretty sterile setting.

You don't get that immediate appeal with stories that aren't part of the universal awareness. Not only that, erotic fan fic based on stories that are already erotic won't stand out as clearly from the originals. Just like you can't satirise satire, it's hard to be transgressive in a world that's already transgressive. Readers are likely to just treat the stories as a shared universe.

At the same time, I can see where this idea wouldn't be a perfect fit for the LitCon event. That's for sharing characters, not necessarily telling new stories about them in their original setting.

I understand your reasons, even if I don't agree with them. And I'll tell you why.

Your idea to breathe some life into the C&FF category is good and noble, but it stems from incorrect perception, IMO. The reason why that category isn't popular isn't due to the lack of FF stories; it's due to the lack of readers' interest. Simply put, there are far better places to read it, so not many readers with such taste come to Literotica.

Writing FF has its pros and cons. It's easier because characters, or the universe, already exist, and readers have already formed an attachment to them. Your job is already halfway done.
A typical FF story simply builds on the lore and character development that the original author already achieved.

But it's also more problematic, because unless you are writing FF about Superman or Star Wars, there will be plenty of readers who won't know the original characters and will thus have no interest in reading about them. But even if you write about Superman, readers will have a formed opinion about the character, and will react badly if you write something "out of character."

I've often browsed C&FF and found that I had no idea about many of the characters that people wrote about, even if I consider myself relatively well-acquainted with TV Shows, movies, and popular books. It's a tricky category, even when people come specifically to read it, which isn't the case on Lit.
Your idea is commendable, but I doubt it will bring life to the category.

Anyway, I pitched my idea at the start of the thread because I thought it would be a good opportunity to promote the reading of each other's stories, but also to breathe some new life into some of the older Lit stories. I also thought it would be fun to see what we do with each other's characters and universes.

Anyway, you seem to have made a general decision, so I'll stop pushing this idea any further. It's always been your show. And as I said, I wish all the best to this event, and I hope it surprises us all.

I’ve stayed out of FF because my FF love is immediately problematic (Harry Potter) from both an age up perspective and litigation avoidance.
That said, I might try this using an LE author. I have this idea for DeFleur’s George and the Adorable Sissers that has been haunting my brain for a month now.

Finally a reason to write that "Bewitched" femdom fantasy that Ive been jerking off to planning to write all these years
Years ago I used to troll sexstories.com before I found LE. There was an I Dream of Genie FF that sat at the top of the ratings for months.

I wrote a little original fiction (with almost no readers) and a lot of fanfiction (with more but still relatively few readers) for a number of years before I migrated to Lit to try to get new, original fiction with a sexier bent in front of a larger market. I might be interested in this event for a fandom I've never tried before.

However, some of the posts discuss "fanfic-ing" an existing Lit story. There are far too many of those so the chance of more than a relatively small percentage of readers knowing the Lit story being "fanfic-ed" is very small and, in my opinion, not worth the effort.

It's a valid point, but ultimately I think it should be up to an individual author to decide what's worth the effort.

I for one am in!

A BlackPink gangbang fan-fic LOL!!!!!!

There's a Lolita edge to their performance that I find disturbing. I dont WANT to be that attracted to a girl that seems to be in high school still, though there is a lyric in the song where one specifically calls herself a "nineties baby", which would make her AT LEAST 26 yrs old.

I'll click over into my sixties in about six weeks and I just don't feel I should be lusting over women that look younger than my own daughter.

I could venture into Fan Fic... and I have set a goal with myself to write in every available category, although it's more an idea than a real goal simply because I haven't put any time limit on it. a real "goal" should include a deadline.

How about “A Dark Side Venture”? That can catch more stories than a title potentially only invoking Taboo & Star Wars stuff. Might interest more authors and audiences. Just my opinion.

So, does anyone have a catchy name for the Fan Fic challenge? My initial thought: "I Am Your Father".
Taking A Crack at Erotic Universes

Crack - taking an idea to a ridiculous level.

Erotic Universes - A play on Alternate Universes

I'm still working out where I want to play with this. Erotic fanfiction roleplay is where I first started writing and diving back in after... God like 25 years is gonna be a trip.

Agreed. I wrote a lot of backstories for the online MMORPG, City of Heroes that I played for years. So I'm going to dive back into my comic book roots. It's going to be great.

As for the title, let me think on it for a while.

I might have to reanimate my DOA SW series, Teenage Jedi 🤔
You’ll want a Nightsister for that, if you’re looking for a necromancer in the Star Wars universe. There’s a pretty awesome bisexual character with such powers named Merrin in the recent Star Wars Jedi video games.

I enjoyed City of Heroes before they shut it down. Would enjoy fanfic too.

I meant figuratively

Haha same! I still have some screenshots of my heroes, too. And a Notebook full of their origins, backstories and how they encountered my husband's paired character. God I miss that game. Champions just wasn't the same.

There's still a working private server. People are still playing.
