I remember before voicemail was a things and when no one even had phone answering machines. If they weren’t home when you called you just had to keep calling again and again until someone answered. It could take days to reach someone.

I'm also from the UK. I don't remember the break in the afternoon but I do remember the break at night and the BBC test card as the BBC didn't air 24hrs.
