My suggestion of world literature is a proxy for gaining broader cultural understanding of perspectives from different people's.

As an American, this may be a more national issue, but learning about art, literature, and music broadens the young mind beyond that experienced directly.

Oh, one last very personal suggestion: that Chemistry and Math(s) have real-world applications that make them worth studying.

I know too many people who never had the opportunity to learn WHY they were learning/memorizing all those basic concepts and facts. Many folks might later see the learning gap when watching popular science programming on TV, but most miss the opportunity to build those basic competencies that can be applied to real-world interests.

Note that this is mostly an issue of the demands put on instructors of those intro courses, but it is a crying shame that more folks don't understand the basics.
