Thanks,I was just pointing out the fact that the British did it first.
I find it ironic that the country that was a leader in the slave trade was the leader in the abolitionist movement.
How much it was for moral or trade reasons is up for discussion.

Spain banned slavery and slave raiding in the Americas in 1542. So the UK wasn't "the first." Yes, Spain continued to allow slave raiding from Africa, but obviously the UK wasn't "first."

Portugual did the same in 1570.

During the Revolutionary War, in 1775 the US banned slave trading. Further, in 1787 the US Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 outlawing slavery in the Northern Territories.

In the end, the abolishing of slavery in the "modern era" began in the 1300's when Sweden abolished slavery within it's lands and territories (including Finland).
