I'm here in Kansas City and I've seen linguists that say that we speak the purest form of American English. No inherent accents. But we do tend to pick them up when we travel to places with heavy accents, like Texas or Boston. But if you get a bit outside of Kansas City, a lot of people have a slightly southern accent.
I had a friend from Ann Arbor who denied having any accent, “We talk like the people on tv talk” she was fond of incorrectly sayingI never thought of the Midwest having much of an accent until I watched Ted Lasso. Then I was confused because he sounded southern to me… guess it’s hard to tell the differences if you’re not from there! I can always pick out a Boston accent though
