And shoofly pie. And hexes!I wouldn't say dumplings are an art form but in reality they are soggy bread. I grew up in PA. Dutch country and there are good dumplings and some not so good!
I’m pretty sure I know…All we have to figure out is who shoots and who reloads.
That life experience gives one perspective. My parents were poor growing up, got married after WW2, worked blue collar jobs, swing shifts so took turns watching us kids, and were good cooks. They wanted me to get an education and I did. They were proud of me as I of them.My dad did the cornbread and milk thing too, as dessert.
When I say say he grew up poor, I mean 6th grade education. His mom died before he was 3. His father used a mule to pull felled trees from the hallows to take to the mill via wagon. On the way home from the mill, they would hunt for dinner. Squirrel and quail with an occasional rabbit. Couldn't afford the time it took to walk to a lake to fish.
My mom scooped him up after he returned from Korea and discovered his girlfriend had dropped him for someone that made it home before he did. He was heartbroken. He had just gotten a letter from her before he started his transport back to the states too.
His dad died shortly after they were married having sold everything to afford the hooch that killed him. Dad never had two pennies to rub together until he didn't anyone to support but his wife and kids.
Smart though. Had to be. He was a success, but that's another story.
