The 50 Plus Cafe, Pub, All-Nite Greasy Spoon and Dive Bar

With you brother. Lost around 15-20 this time last year, mainly just due to work schedule and doing that intermittent fasting routine. Then a couple of vacations and the crazy that’s happened over the last three months I put it all back on added ten for good measure. Had a little health scare and they told me my glucose levels were a “tad” high, so back to the intermittent fasting this time with cutting the sugar in my coffee 😠 and just weeding out my sweet tooth.

I dropped 10 fairly quickly but sort of backslid when I moved my mother in. Vacation upcoming so hopefully some walks in the spring weather and getting out on the water will help also. The struggle is real like you posted. Let’s start encouraging each other more. Maybe us chatting in the open will help others in their quest!

Big Ol’ Jet Airliner taking me home today! Got to visit a cowboy steak house I haven’t been to in 30 odd years last night! If ever in Tucson, hit Pinnacle Peaks. The atmosphere and food hadn’t changed in 30 yrs but the prices sure had! 🤣. When we were regulars here in the early 90’s you could get a 22oz steak, all the Fix’ns, and an iced tea for $14.99. It’s closer to $40 now but still was a nice walk down memory lane.

I’ve shifted gear from Alpine spring to desert SW spring. inspiration hits when it hits!

Safe travels, HDH!

That restaurant sounds great. I love places like that.

Great photo too. That looks like desert blanket flower.

Cut out sugar and all processed foods, and mainly eat meals with high veggie content plus fish and chicken for protein. (I had to cut out acidic foods that caused pain, including tomatoes, red peppers and chillis, plus a few other things including red wine).

Carbs at weekends only.

Make loads of tasty green veggie soup, mainly from frozen veg including onions, spinach, cabbage, sprouts, kale, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower, plus loads of peas to thicken it up, and add a fresh bag of watercress a few minutes before mixing it up with a stick blender. Also add any salad ingredients that are nearing their sell-by date.

I add veggie stock and loads of herbs and spices (garlic, ginger, turmeric, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme etc) to give it loads of flavour.

Eating "five a day" is a myth. If you play loads of sport, like i do, you need 15 a day! This soup delivers that.

It also makes your digestive system ruthlessly efficient!
I mostly follow this diet, and I do intermittent fasting, which works pretty well for me.

Problem is, everything revolves around my meals and eating and I eat at 10-noon and then if I don’t eat at around 6 -630 PM, I get really hangry.

Awww! Mrs. M is a gem!🥰 Did you get your phone health care visit today? How was it?

Sort of. The owner (they are all franchised) arrived around 5 this afternoon. She has some small talk with Mom and then I gave the tour of the house so she could identify any issues her team might have.

She is going to make another visit next week with one of the caregivers and introduce mom to them. This should help alleviate any anxiety mom might have.

Then I can get back on the road and start making an income. It's cutting it close to be sure.

Oh, gosh, M! I'm so sorry! If you don't mind, I'd like to make a few comments. But first, NOTHING I'm about to say is meant as a criticism.

Your mom must be on Social Security. Does this allow your family to buy food for the month? Are there food banks you can visit? Does your mom (or you) have SNAP benefits? I know the social safety nets are in chaos right now. Some states do better than others.

Now, as to fasting. If you're not providing your body with enough protein, it will cannibalize from your muscles. Try buying beans and brown rice in bulk if you can. Get the dried beans. Look for them in bulk bins or at the Dollar Store. Brown rice has a low glycerin index and, when mixed with beans, makes a complete protein. It will fill you up, provide protein and fiber, and stave off hunger. See if you can get vegetable boxes from local farms. Eating local improves your gut biome.

You can make stews with cheap cuts of protein. A large pot will feed you for days. Cooking a chuck roast low and slow in liquid makes it delicious! Save your bones to make stock. Cooking the bones long enough will cause the minerals and bone marrow to leach out. This is so beneficial for you.

Try to get out for walks daily. Stress raises your cortisol level which makes you hungry. It's a vicious cycle. Getting some exercise every day can break this cycle.

I'm not a nutritionist or a dietitian. I do know a thing or two about dieting, however. I wish there was something else I could do for you! 🫂🫂🫂

Trying to get my siblings together so we can put the land and house in a trust or corporation. She does not qualify for any sort of assistance because of the assets she has. Once I get back on the road I will be able to afford the set up fees.

When that's done, I can get her on Medicaid. She has a home care insurance policy that has been paying for her home care for about 6 years. She bought it a long time ago and it works like an annuity but is limited to home care for withdrawal. She's got less than $100k left in it. That works out to about 2 years. If I get started on this right now, she should be set up with Medicaid by the time it runs out along with any other assistance benefits she might need.

If all that falls thru, I'm gonna have to sell the property. All but prolly 20 acres immediately around the house and hope she never finds out.

She wants to be able to convalesce/hospice here like dad did all the way to the end, looking out the giant picture window from the hospital bed into the woods and the pond behind the house. He passed away doing that just after sunrise. He was being kept comfortable with morphine until the end.

It's a plan tho.

I have a few milestones met and still to come.

That glucose thing is from carbs. Swap to protein and it will go away.

Grains are a peasant food. Grains are for feeding our herd animals to fatten them up for the dinner table. They have extra stomachs and digestive methods that help them break down the grains and greens so they can get the nutrients out. We can't. We just end up passing the greens thru and storing the grains as visceral fat because we can't convert it into usable energy before it gets stored because our bodies don't have hooves or horns. (Simple descriptions)

I noticed during that year of meat and eggs only that I only had a bowel movement once a week and it was small and easy. Every bit of meat that I ate was nearly totally consumed by my body.

That protein went so much further as fuel than did carbs. Satiation lasted all day if I allowed myself to eat until I was full ( fatty meat, eggs, bacon, sausage, hot dogs). Anything as long as it was animal protein and lots of it. That one meal would last me two days easily.

It's not cheap to get started. It takes weeks to ween yourself and push all those carbs out of your system and convert your body over to using meat protein for fuel. The Keto flu is the result. After your over the keto flu it gets a whole lot easier. Your gonna have to eat a lot of meat a lot of times during the day until then.

I made two 1/2 sheet pans of bacon every couple of days and bagged up bacon in small portions to use as snacks instead of reaching for chips or cookies.

After a few weeks, it all got easier. I noticed I was leaving half my plate untouched. I was full. My mind was changing to tell me when I had enough. Fasting was so much easier and. Took less food to get there.

Beware - when you all of a sudden don't have meat, it takes nothing to start using carbs again. You don't even realize it. Grocery shopping and pantry choices were the real killers in this diet.

I can't wait to get back to making some real money again just so I can ....

Shit! Wall of text again.... sorry.
