I don’t know if this is common, but personally I find it very difficult to draw straight from my imagination, without a physical reference point. Even if it is just a very quick pencil sketch. Of course, that might be no bad thing, who knows what lurks in the imagination!
Sometimes I draw straight from my imagination, sometimes use a photo reference that I make a quick sketch of as you do….sometimes my drawings change as they go along, sometimes I can dash one off very quickly and sometimes I have to spend several sessions trying to get something presentable. Whatever you’re doing works!
